Catcher 1 639
Hi bub is it out of the way of the public eye ? Quote Link to post
Shaunm41 14
The infestation is not as bad as I was lead to believe.. There is none inside at all.. There is a large food source ouside which is where they seem to congregate. Once that is removed then will have to find the nesting site and deal with that.. That will be left to a pro.. Or a load of terriers and smoke machines.. lol Quote Link to post
MR TEA POT 1,287
I'm afraid I disagree with you there Mr TP. People shouldn't risk the health of themselves, their pets, and their children just to prove a point. If you'd seen the number of failed DIY treatments as me, I'm sure you'd agree. It doesn't just effect the home owner either. By the time people have tried (and usually failed) the infestation has often also started to effect neighbouring properties. Money is no excuse. All (bar two) local authorities offer free or subsidised treatments to residents - and there is also the Social Fund which exists to help people with this type of crisis who are on income based benefits. It's not that some people can't sort these problems out for themselves, it's that most people seem to be incapable of reading simple instructions on a container, never mind understand the basics of rodent biology. Fair point mate i was not picking a argument just putting a point across, and you answered it well enough. Quote Link to post
DUCKWING 302
WELL , I HATE TO SAY IT BUT ............. ITS NOT JUST THE PUBLIC THAT HAVE TROUBLE DEALING WITH RATS OVER THE YRS IVE BEEN CALLED INTO DEAL WITH SEVERAL INFESTATIONS THAT HAVENT BEEN DEALT WITH PROPERLY ,...... TWO BY A GAMEKEEPER WHO MOONLIGHTS AS A PEST CONTROLLER !! FOR A LOCAL AUTHORITY ,........ THROWING A FEW BAGS OF BAIT BEHIND AND UNDER SHEDS ETC .......... ISNT A BIG DEAL AND THATS EXACTLY WHAT ALL THE LOCAL PESTIES IVE SEEN DO !! IS THAT WHAT THEY NEED A CERTIFICATE FOR ???? PERSONALLY SHAUN .......... I WOULD TAKE A GOOD WELL RESPECTED TERRIERMAN FROM YOUR AREA TO THE SITE ....... LET HIM ASSESS THE SITUATION AND IF SUITABLE COME BACK WITH THE SMOKERS AND TERRIERS TERRIERS CAN MAKE A HUGE DENT IT VERY LARGE POPULATION IS A VERY SHORT TIME ... IF THE GROUNDS SUITABLE TO WORK ON , YRS AGO ......... WE WORKED A KNACKERS YARD WITH THE DOGS THAT WAS HEAVING WITH RATS ........ THEY WERE ........ EATING A 4 STONE SACK OF POISON ..... PLUS .......PER NIGHT AND THE OWNER SIMPLY COULDNT AFFORD IT ............ A WEEKEND CUTTING BACK BRASH DOWN BY THE BECK RUNNING THROUGH HIS LAND AND THE FOLLOWING WEEKEND SMOKING THEM WITH THE TERRIERS AND A ROLL OF WIRE NETTING TOTALLED IN THE MANY HUNDREDS , FOR THE FIRST MONTH WE MADE WEEKLY VISITS TILL THE RATS WERE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN ........ AFTER THAT THE POISON WAS USED TO KILL ANY STRAGGLERS AND NEW RESIDENTS ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post
stubby 175
I can understand you'll get different replies from pesties and hunters, and both ways can be effective in the control of rats, but what everyone has failed to notice, or maybe they did notice it, but failed to let it register, is the statement below, this on its own is the reason a certified pest controller needs to be called in, theres way to many adverts on the tv nowdays, quoting, where theres blame, theres a claim, not following the statement below, if ANYTHING was to happen while this job was being undertaken, the owners would'ent want a claim directed at themselves, loosing them money, they would simply pass the buck, to whoever carried out the job, saying "we did tell them" . I have been instructed I need to take a respirator just to go have a look around.. Quote Link to post

stubby 175
I could'ent give a toss what way its done, I was mealy pointing out something that was noted by the poster, he also mentioned it being a payed job, so irrelivent of wether he subs out the work to a free terrier man, or a paid pestie, if anything goes wrong, the blame will come back to him, irrelivent on the subby being paid or not you dont need to tell me bout health and safety, I gave up construction to be a pestie, and the underground are 10 times worst for wasting money on simple jobs a rabbit job I priced at just over a grand, finally ended up at £26000 after all the crap was added Quote Link to post
stubby 175
what was added? I as a pestie/ survey, quoted it costing around £1000 for materials my managers added £15000 for labour, inc 84 days visits throughout a year contractors who were subbing work to us, added £10,000 for their labour totally around £26000 a single pestie though could have done this job, inc a yearly contract, for a few grand, but the amount of certification needed to enter/live rail areas on the underground, plus the paperwork, and multiple contractors, as certain trades cant touch other trades areas, is what bumps prices up Quote Link to post
pointer 543
I manage a factory dealing in chemicals and therefore deal with H and S amongst all the other over over top legislation etc that goes with it.Im also a qualified risk assesor and as such know that any company has to take seriously the risk posed to the general public.Paid or not makes no difference. At the very least most places of work such as this will have to wear hi-viz and other PPE,anybody who enters the site would also need to wear the same. If someone did get hurt on a site like the above someone would be responsible, absolutely no dought about it. Legislation is made,it is risk assessment that decides which parts are relevant to a particular site or the work undertaken.I feel confident that anybody who works for the HSE would confirm that letting unpaid people do anything on an industrial area would come under the responsibility of care laws. That would include protecting people from potentially disease ridden rodents. BUT i might be wrong, there must be someone on this forum that works for the HSE,i could check out the exact laws if this thread needs further debate but it dosent. This is Britain, its gone mad and you really could end up in hot water over something as simple as letting people kill rats. JR Yipp 111
just a couple of observations..... how could rats survive in an area full of toxic gases that requires a mask to be worn and no terriers to enter.... not sure that ones been thought through. As for people doing DIY pest control, i think if its for there own use and common sense is applied then there is no harm. i would liken it to fixing your own car, if done wrong could be dangerous but if done properly is fine. however if a job requires a professional then that's exactly what should be got and pay professional rates. running a business is not easy or cheap and pro pesties do a Stirling job and should be payed accordingly. it is also my opinion that folk coming on here to try and gain other pesties knowledge for financial gain is wrong and undermines there knowledge and skill.... however this IS an open forum where people do ask for advice in nearly all sections. i rarely post in this section as it not my skill base but i do read most threads. perhaps it would do no harm to be slightly less guarded with folk who are simply wanting to do a good diy job.... maybe this situation could be improved with some good constructive advice. this is not directed at anyone btw, just an observations that some professionals with a clearly good knowledge are not always so forth coming with it for fellow members who simply want to improve their personal skills.
