Shaunm41 14
Hi guys, after some info please.. Im not a pest controller but need to get rid of some rats.. I run a waste management company and we have been asked to clear a cold store of around 60 tonnes of rotting food. The place is full of rats and we need to have a big cull before we can remove anything. How could I do this? The agent fot the property said he sat there in his car and counted a dosen running around the other day just outside. Someone mentioned shooting with an air rifle. I have an air rifle and im a pretty good shot, would this be viable? Any advice would be a great help. Thanks Shaun Edited June 8, 2010 by Shaunm41 Quote Link to post
d6k 11
Sounds like a nightmare why do you need to clear the rats first? baiting would be difficult and even if you could get them to eat which it doubtfull due to there being 60 tonnes of food to go at it would take weeks. You could shoot a few but I would imagine if you sat there for a week you would not get em all. I would clear the food first them call someone in to bait the area. Quote Link to post
Matt 160
Stick to running your waste management company and call in professional pest controllers. Quote Link to post

You could shoot a few but I would imagine if you sat there for a week you would not get em all. I would clear the food first them call someone in to bait the area. That was my idea but the customer knows best, they specifically said they want to get rid of as many rats as possible before anything is moved. Its in an industrial area where there is other food units and 200 yards from residential properties. Said they dont want hundreds of rats running around the place when the food is moved and disturbing them. Maybe I could shoot a few to make it look like i have fullfilled their requirements then just get someone in after the place has been cleaned.. I have no intention of becoming a pest controller for a day. Nor try do something I know nothing about. I simply want to keep my customer happy as they are paying me a large sum to do this job. I shoot rabbits with the air rifle so thats why I thought it may help with the rats... Quote Link to post
Matt 160
Would your insurance policy cover you for using a firearm to control pests? Somehow I doubt it. Call in a professional pest control company - it sounds like they are paying a large sum for a professional job to be done, not for someone to have a bit of sport. Quote Link to post
fellpack 7
you need to deal with the rats before moving anything this will require a program not a bit of sport with a gun Quote Link to post
moxy 617
When your airgun sport fails get in touch matey, im local to you and could possibly help. Where out of interest is this cold store?? To add, matt is right, insurance wise you may struggle and even if it was a viable option i dont think you would make much of an impact upon the population, without putting the hours in. Knocking one or two isnt going to solve your problem. Anyhoo have a do and get in touch Quote Link to post
Matt 160
IGNORE MATT THE RAT HE IS AN ARSEHOLE GET A BUNCH OF LOCAL MEN WITH THERE TERRIERS THEY WILL PUT A DENT IN THE PROBLEM ALL THE BEST I might be an arsehole, but at least I'm not a simpleton who can't post without using block capitals! The point is that this is a commercial job, for which the OP is being paid a 'large amount' (his words), and he is trying to offer a professional pest control service without using a professional (on the cheap). A good team of terriers may be a way forward, but this sounds like a serious infestation, that needs a serious survey. That can only be done by a properly trained professional - not a 'waste disposal' person, or some dick who just wants some sport with his or her terriers or gun. You are being paid for a professional service, so it makes sense to use a professional. Quote Link to post

No my insurance would not cover that, but my BASC insurance would. Also how long has an air rifle been classed as a firearm? Quote Link to post

I just want to clear as many as I can before I can move anything, then will get a pest control company in after to sort the rest.. Quote Link to post
Matt 160
Your BASC insurance WOULD NOT cover a commercial activity. An air weapon is a firearm in the eyes of the law. I suggest you get some professional help ASAP as you seem unable to understand the legalities of the work you are being paid to do. Quote Link to post

I have been instructed I need to take a respirator just to go have a look around.. Quote Link to post

I am been paid as a waste management company to remove the waste not deal with the pest control. I was looking for an option to clear some rats first as a 'Free of charge' service. Quote Link to post
Born Hunter 17,775
Im certainly no pestcontroller but if the rats have to be culled first then i would suggest the best approach would be to call in the terriers and smokers and then trap with a suitable number of fenns and 110 bodygrippers. Lamping them will also help but a good hit with terriers will give the customer the result he wants to see... Quote Link to post
