i have had a good run recently on the air rifle front untill today. went out to zero the gun after a good few days hunting and at 25 yards my groups are awefull it will group two really close and then there will be a high one and then a low one then one to the left an inch etc so i set to work on all the possible reasons i could think of, i tightened the stock bolts the scope bolts cleaned the barrel and the outcome... the same as before.. i even dismantled the thing de-greased it then re-greased it and put it back together, outcome... NILL the only other expanation i can think of it pellets, but i always use these pellets and never really have a problem also i have been trying to zero of a bench, can the way the butt sits in your sholder create bad groups? any explanations welcome cheers lads

Air Gunner are you resting the front of the stock on the bench rest or on your palm mate?

What rifle is it your using and what pellets mate?

There is also the case that the rifle and pellet may be matched perfectly but your trigger technique, breathing, position and hold and follow through are not as good as they could be buddy.

If the trigger on your rifle is set quite hard you will also loose accuracy there pal as you will be pulling the shot all ways before the pellet leaves the barrel.

For shooting tight groups you really need a nice soft trigger weight mate.

For shots to go up and down I could say that your either not holding your breath on the outward breath correctly and for long enough until the pellet hits the target, your rifle is very inconsistent and shooting with a big shot to shot variation or your resting the forward part of the stock or barrel on something hard mate which you should never do.

For shots to go left and right it could be your position and hold, bad trigger technique or hard trigger causing it pal.

If I was you buddy id check the trigger first and adjust it if need be.

Then when sitting at your bench look through your scope and put the cross hair over the target pal. Now close both eyes and raise and lower the barrel and then open your eyes and look back through the scope.

Is it still on the target for line? If not you are in the wrong position and need to move until the vertical post on your cross hair is cutting the target after you open your eyes again mate.

Remember to as your breathing out, hold your breath compose yourself before squeezing off the second stage of the trigger while on the target.

Don’t release the trigger forward or move your eye from the scope until you hear the pellet hit the target. (follow through).

I hope this helps some mate.

Best wishes

Wow that's quite a post zini my friend, thanks the rifle I'm using is a BSA supersport gas ram using rws superdomes. The one outlier that has changed is the shooting position I'm using a table with a cloth on top and my palm underneath not really gripping the forend. I'm pretty sure it's not the trigger etc as I have been getting good groups for the last couple of months. I will try all these tips though and also go back to my original shooting position. Cheers for the tips I have never heard the one about not putting the trigger forward untill impact.

Cheers lads, Zini mate your rep is ace as it is. I took the thing apart again today to give it a proper polish etc and realized one of the stock threads was stripped :( so out came the tap and die set all done then when i put it back together it did the old trick of not releasing the piston when the trigger is pulled, this has happened before and its because of the sear being rough and damaged due to constant use and abuse, Bloody thing :p so i have ordered one from chambers and waiting for it to be in stock, also i am going to play around with the trigger weight while its out of action. Thanks again lads i will update you soon as to whether it is a faulty gas ram or whatever the problem

it sounds from your op that your quite comfortable with your combo as you said you were! getting good groups in the past, have you tried cleaning your barrel or have you previosley tried a different pellet as this could result in your problem i had the same problem after trying jsb's and my barrel hating them i had to run quite a few aa fields back through it till the accuracy returned :big_boss:

Cheers lads. My gun has been out of action for a while recently :( however today I got some wet and dry paper and got polishing. The sear was not releasing the piston anymore so that was priority polished that up nicely and then polished the piston again as the first time i dident make it mirror finish, put the old girl back together.. Cleaned the barrel and now my groups are back to scratch! The trigger is far nicer now and the gun feels super smooth so all is well. I am using the same pellets as ever but I have a feeling it was the barrel being a tad dirty from a fresh lube and most of the above guides were probably also affecting me. All together though you have sorted my problem so grate to you!
