FERRETBOY 680
does anyone use bells on there ferrets collar whilst ferreting.does it help bolt the rabbits as i know people used them before the ferret finder to hopefully hurry up the rabbits into bolting so they dont get a lay up.i dont mind having to dig but much prefere it when rabbits are bolting. good hunting rew Quote Link to post
witton 6
I cant see it making rabbits bolt, if a rabbit doesnt want to shift i doubt the bell will make a difference The only reason i can see people useing bells is to help find ferrets that have left the warren un noticed David Quote Link to post
Guest Studentsnaresman
I use a locator collar attached to a bell harness and it has saved my ferrets a number of times. Yes they do get caught in the nets more, but I would rather that than lose one of them. Friday just gone, I set done 40 nets and after 20mins I tried to locate my boy with the ferret finder. After 10mins of panic I heard him running off down the tree line about 50m away. He got out of a hole in the middle of a bramble bush which I thought was seperated from from the main warren. He even went under a small wall. I may have to reset my nets more, but I can live with that. I have also trainned my ferrets to return to me by jingling their hutch keys. Every time I go near them with food, rabbit or milk I jingle my keys and tease them for a bit. Now they associate that noise with a good thing and run straight to them. Nik Quote Link to post
FERRETBOY 680
i have done the same,i have started to train my ferrets to recall :11: it sounds pretty pafetic but i think it will come in usefull in the future, and believe me they do come to me and even follow me round the garden when i give a few squeaks with my mouth.i can stand at my back door and call them to my feet then i praise them with a treat.my albino got out the shed the other day and i saw her in the next doors garden so i called her back to me because they is a massive hedge seperating me and next door so i couldnt reach her.i was glad to get her back to me asap as there are many cats around my area. good hunting rew Quote Link to post
Guest Lurchers2006
We use them ferreting because all we ferret are hedgerows and they really help not bolting just the actually keeping track of them. Quote Link to post
Guest Bigbob
Bells are okay if your ferreting a area of gorse ect but they will just fill with soil in a normal burrow . Quote Link to post

Neil 0
if it's dense undergrowth then i suppose alls well, mind you when the fert stops moving your fecked.. I always had bells on my ferrets collars and reading this reminded me that i no longer have these, so thanks Rew for this thread, They come in handy when ferreting around blackberry bushes, the ammount of times ive lost track of my ferrets just recently, were as if id had the bells on it would have saved me loads of time!
