This is a littermate sister to the yella bitch Tor that Kye owns. Kye and I had bred Tor to Stitch a couple months back. Kye had drove a long ways to get Tor bred. This time my other buddy drove all the way from New York to breed his bitch. I met him in Decatur, Indiana at a friends house. All in all, I drove 8 hours and he drove 20 to get this breeding done. Anyhow, just under 1700 miles total, alot of time, and a bunch of diesel fuel.

Dan what size are those staghounds?Just wondering is there much variation in size.....do some people look for a smaller build dog for cotton-tails and maybe a bigger dog for yotes and white-tail deer??Or does the general size suffice for all the game you run?......yis John

 

Them two dogs there are between 28 and 29 inches. My John dog is the same and so are my two females. I suppose 28 to 30 inches and weighing between 75 and 95 pounds and I call that a coyote dog. Bitches of course being the shorter lighter ones and males being the larger of em. There are guys running dogs of all shapes and sizes though on coyotes and jackrabbits all across this country. Most of the guys that actually run coyotes in the Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas, New Mexico, Texas, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, (get the picture) these fellas just call these dogs greyhounds. The staghound term is old yet new. I think President Roosevelt and General Custer were kinda responsible for making the term popular really but most in the US still call them greyhounds. If you talk to any of these boys who's families have been at this a long time, none of them will use the term staghound.

 

Same goes for the jackrabbit dogs. They are smaller and lighter and probably most of em got a touch of saluki in em here or there but mostly just greyhound and them boys call em greyhounds.

 

These are just generalities man. There is no pure definition. Rural Americans are a total different breed than what most can imagine. We keep it simple which sometimes confuses people that wanna put too much thought into stuff. Little bitty light in the ass dogs will not kill coyotes outright and I dont give a flyin f**k what anybody says, I know it aint so. Big ole powerful dogs will not catch jack rabbit. It aint gonna happen. Deer are a different story all together. Its a totally different kind of specialist that sorta and I say sorta falls somewhere in between the two. Our deer are like fallow in size but according to what I hear can outrun them bad and these white tail can cut like a f****n jack rabbit. They haul ass and can jump shit that you cannot believe. Its dangerous business to be honest.

Dan both Tor and Blister regularly took 3/3's and 4/4's educated jackrabbits on a desert dry lake bed we used to live near and they are decently sized 29-30" dogs. Agree with pretty much everything else you said though!

Oh yes, I know that Tiff but they are somewhat the exception and not the rule really. They are also a bit lighter boned than the dogs I have and also are lighter on the front end allowing them turn much much much better than my dogs. My dogs kinda turn like freight trains compared to dogs like Blister and Tor but they have tons and tons of power up front when they grab something. They can run a bit too but its a longer process and they cannot come out of the corners like Blister and Tor. Of course, once again just generalities and I have never even seen them two run really so hope you can agree again and if not tell that "boy" you live with that me and him

Had one or two of them but didnt keep em around very long. I dont think you will find many of them fell. We are talkin about long "slips" and long runs on a critter that dont come back to ya or dip and dodge. They line out and thats that. Our big "bunnies" are alot like that also. They head for the hills man.
