Phantom 631
I've been meaning to get out with my Springer for a long time now; but have always found that I've left my Beast at home and taken my Baby out instead, I think I have been getting lazy So after a message from Si today, I decided I AM going to take the Beast for a walk During a break in the rain, I grabbed a tin of AAF's and headed out to the Horse Paddock with my gun Got there and found I only had some ink jet printed targets in my bag and one of the NSRA card 10 Meter Pistol targets. I meant to get some more, but rushing out I forgot and I also forgot to take my phone, that was being charged. This was a good thing really as it being home means I couldn't take pix of the embarrassing grouping I was getting having not shot the springer for such a long time. I put the Kassnar 56mm AO Scope on the Beast yesterday as well as the custom silencer from UK Niel. Anyways, I got to the paddock and set up one of the inkjet paper targets and began slinging lead down range at 15 yards. I'd never noticed the weight of the rifle before and I thought I was used to the heavy long pull of the trigger. After a while a deffinate group began to form way off to the right of the paper target but it was pretty much on the right level although the group was about 3 inches Trying to peel the soggy target off the sticky putty was impossible as it just kept tearing like wet toilet tissue paper I made the windage adjustments and fired another load of lead with another A4 printed paper target. The groups of ten shots began to reduce as I began to get a more consistent hold of the Beast, but with the heavy Kassnar optics on my Deltoids on the left shoulder really began to burn. Think I need to get some :weight_lift2: done! After the groups reduced to just sub 50mm I moved out to 30 yards and continued, where I was suprised to see that the groups stayed at about 2 inches. Eventually I got them down to 1.5 inches with each 10 shot string, having a little rest between each shot. When the rain and drizzle stopped I quickly got the only NSRA target out of the bag and tried to stick it to the putty. This took some doing as the putty was slippery now as the rain and remains of the previous paper prevented me getting it stuck. I dried the putty using the sleeve of my jacket. Not perfect but it was enough to allow me to get enough tack on the putty to hold the Card target. I wandered over to the gun and fired the next 5 shots with a two minute rest between each as the left shoulder was getting a bit tender with the Lactic Acid refused to drain from my deltoid muscles very quickly. Not a bad final group given the 8-lbs weight of the gun and scope. Just a little low! I didn't bother to adjust Elevation; I will do that tomorrow afternoon if I have time to get some more practice in with the Spring powered Beast. I decided to come home again as it started to rain again and the wind was begining to pick up. Final Group (scanned below) If I can keep this size with a 10 shot string I will be Really, Really Happy especially in the bull Wouldn't try putting lead in a Bunny though yet until I've had another tin of practicing on paper. This group must have taken me at least 150 pellets just to get re-aquainted with my Beast. Now all you PCP users, Repeat after me :shout: I MUST NOT NEGLECT MY SPRINGER SKILLS, Louder :shout: :shout: I MUST NOT NEGLECT MY SPRINGER SKILLS, LOUDER.... :shout: :shout: :shout: I MUST NOT NEGLECT MY SPRINGER SKILLS ................... Phantom Oh the Gun only just fits in its case now Edited June 6, 2010 by Phantom Quote Link to post
zini 1,939
A good post that Tony buddy . I think its good for others (new shooters) to see that someone who can shoot as good as you pal with a PCP still respects the skill and technique needed to shoot a good springer correctly and accurately . Its true what you said mate . We must not forget our basic marksmanship principles and forget our springers. Si Edited: I forgot to also say good shooting buddy and a real good group for so long not using her . Si Edited June 6, 2010 by zini Quote Link to post

Phantom 631
Thanks guy's Just shows don't it? Cheap aint always crap I still need to get more practice with her though before I assassinate anything other than paper with her :11: Apart from the burn in the deltoids, I really had fun this afternoon with that and I know from experiance, my body starts to get DOMS just over 24 hours later and thet usually last a couple of days. So I may wait till Wednesday before I take her Dancing again, give the delts time to recover. Boy am I gonna feel it when that starts Phantom Quote Link to post

andyfr1968 772
TBH the past few times I've been out, I've either used my HW90 or RWS52. I only got my first PCP about a year ago, an AA410c, lovely gun but I don't find it very rewarding to use. I was bowled over by it to start with but got a little bored with it after a while... I'm not knocking it or PCP's in general but I've mainly gone back to my springers. I'm a bit skint at the moment and have been thinking of selling some of my guns, I don't want to but if push comes to shove, the 410 will be going. I'll NEVER sell the 90.... Like you've proved, Tony, you don't need to spend a fortune to get good results. Cheers, mate. Quote Link to post

Didn't think I would do any smoothing as this is the rifle that got me back into rifle shooting. Now though after shooting my baby for so long and then taking this girl out today, I certainly intend to stick a GRT in her. I used to get on well with the original trigger, but today I found it pretty hard going. I did mention to Si that if I got a bunny with her today it'd be a bonus, I did draw blood but it was on my trigger finger where one of the cracks split from having to apply the pressure to the trigger What have you done to yours Ian? Phantom stripped it all down and got all the factory grease out, it seems the lube they used had these little bits of grit in them and that is what makes the gun go twaaaannnnnggggggggg. iv cleaned the piston, spring, spring guard and spring weight of any little pieces it might have sticking out.also cleaned out the actual cylinder thing where it all goes, checked all seals were ok and re lubed lightly. if you send me a pm i will send you a link to a stripdown on it with pictures, there little preload on the spring. now the gun goes with more of a thud, is quieter and seems more accurate than before, also the little screw behind the trigger it came with adjusts it slightly but the trigger on mine is easy to use because one of the springs inside the trigger unit is bent, works fine though and is easyier to pull. need any more info just ask atb ian Quote Link to post
