harrycatcat 31
I put my chickens food in a small galvanised trough which is covered to stop it getting rained on but every morning just recently its slimy with slug trail. How can I get rid of the slugs/snails without harming the chickens. Feed is dear enough without feeding slugs. PS I thought chickens were supposed to eat slugs but I must have the strain that dont
DUCKWING 302
WELL MATE , I WILL GIVE YOU A TIP ............... FEED THE BIRDS ............IN THE MORNING , GIVE THEM TEN MINUTES TO EAT ALL THEY WANT THEN LIFT THE FOOD , DO THE SAME IN THE EVENING THERES NO NEED TO LEAVE FEED DOWN FOR BIRDS ALL DAY ........... YOU GET PICKY EATERS THAT WAY , AND WILL END UP FEEDING MORE VERMIN THAN POULTRY . AFTER A WHILE YOU WILL WORK OUT WHAT THEY WANT TO EAT AND CAN PUT A MEASURE CUP FULL INTO THE FEEDER , == NO WASTE ................. SLUGS ETC CAN OFTEN CARRY PARASITES SO WORM REGULARLY DUCKWING

Yes they will still cross it! Thats an old wives tale As has been said feed in morning and lift it when they finish then same at night. They will probably eat the slugs and other grubs during the day if theres no feed left for them. You could also try treating the ground around the run with nematodes which will eat the slugs Edited June 6, 2010 by ratattack
neil cooney 10,416
Good advice as usual from Duckwing. Whats more dangerous is the larger, furrier type of vermin that come around when you leave food down overnight.

john b 38
Don't leave it too long between emptyings as they can eventually find a way out
