wuyang 513
Just wondering what success people have with dogs other than lurchers that get taken rabbiting....maybe old scruffy the next door neighbours cross-breed or grannys old dachshund. I used to work border collies, both in the day and at night...had some good fun with these. So come on what you tried ...good or bad dosen't matter....pics welcome. Quote Link to post

foxdigger13 114
me and my dad took are half golden retriever, quarter collie, quarter lab out ferreting once and he did well marking the warrens and holding the rabbits in the nets but he is better suited to hunting up and catching his own rabbits because he has a fantastic nose. jamie1011 5
first hunting dog i ever owned was a siberian husky x alaskan malamute didnt get her for rabbit work but my old next door neighbour and family are big all round hunters and tagged along one night with them and took her and i was hooked from there. the first 6 months of my working dog career was with her and would never change it. i worked her with the malamute thats had them malamute grey pups. and for none running dogs they were great team and good workers. we never blanked. plus made great cover workers to during the day as they could plough through it how ever thick. good times lol Edited June 5, 2010 by jamie1011 Quote Link to post

bigears 205
not had that much to be true full with you mate got him when he was 6 1/2 months old, got him working with the gun first was bolting them for me, picked it up very quick, then started going out with my mate and his lurcher, started hunting up until he cottoned on that my mates dog was catching them ,then all the rabbits disappeared , but plenty of hares about so he just started hunting up and chasing them never going to catch one by himself nearly had a few ruining with my mates lurcher, like i said i just treat him like i used to treat my lurchers, the rabbits have started to come back now so fingers crossed should have a good season, i think he will be alright this coming season, but like i said its not about numbers with me if he catches any its a bonus after all he is a terrier at the end of the day and i got him for bushing Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
Used to have a Border Collie that I used on the lamp and a bit of ferreting. Not ideal but I had a lot of fun with him......... Quote Link to post
wirral countryman 2,110
first dog I ever worked was a border collie cross from the local farm,it had run off to have its pups rather than see the farmer bucket them all again,we think the father was the local gamekeeper's black lab,but nobody knew for sure,I'd be about 10yr old when I found the scraped out den in a hedge about half a mile from the farm, lined with chicken feather's and rabbit skins and bones, not unlike a fox,I took 7 pups home, kept the one that looked like the collie and sold the rest,he was probably one of the best hunting dogs I've owned, brilliant at ratting, could guard a hole and kill any rat that came out while you were on the other side, they'd just be stacked up dead one on top of another,I killed 42 rabbits (mostly mixied) in the daytime, pheasants he could take for fun, moorhens and the odd hare,he was exactly the same speed as a hare,if a hare got up 10ft in front thats how it would stay unless the hare made a mistake,he relied on stamina over many fields to grind it down, but most would get away, that dog gave me a great education on the ways of hunting with a dog,I have mates that still talk about that dog to this day,so that was my first dog,not a bad one for a kid to grow up with, atb, wirralman Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
From my earliest memory we had a black mongrel collie type thing. The result of my grandparents farm bred border collie and the local garage Alsation guard mutt. My mams dog, there are photos of me age six months with the pup on my lap. 'Trixy' (classic name ) lived on the couch all her life, the 'living cushion' we called her as kids, never wore a lead or collar and only ventured out to sniff to the front step, to see which dog had pissed up it that day and then only when she thought her speck was 'safe' on the couch. Come the summer and it 'altered slightly', we spent all our summers in a rusting caravan up the coast in Formby. Trixy was never in, still without any form of 'bondage', she spent all day following us kids, then hunting bunnys over the dunes when rain stopped play, she would return, sometimes hourly, with a rabbit, which she would present, like a field trial lab, to my well pissed off mother, then we'd have to keep her in the van whilst mam let it go over the back. Came back in some states sometimes, staggering, both from the run and the heat but rabbit handed over, lap of water and she was gone again! Used to roll over laughing when mam was 'presented' whilst 'gabbing' to some of the posh, (anyone who had a house with a garden,) women off the site an me mam would go into her "Ooh err" telephone voice, stating she'd never done anything like this before......! You know, lookin back, Trixy would have done me proud..... If I could only have got a collar on her......! Edited June 5, 2010 by Bosun11 1 Quote Link to post
