kurtrog70 6
Hi All, I mated my hob with a mates jill on the 19th of aprill, which means she was due at the end of last month/begining of this month, but still no sign of kits! i went to see the jill earlyer and she is looking big, her nipples are massive and she is losing hair. Can a ferrets pregnancy last over 42/43 days? or do you think its a phantom pregnancy? Your advice would be appreciated Thanks Kurt Quote Link to post

They do go a day or three over at times but assuming there was no error in calculating the moment of supposed fertilization shed've normally had them by now . But . Did the jill stay with the hob for several days or did you whip her out as soon as you thought she'd mated ? Maybe they did'nt mate successfully straight away and your calculations are out because of that . Maybe the hob is a Jaffa . Sometimes early in the year hobs are a bit short of viable sperm and though they mate cheerfully enough they are shooting blanks and just stimulate a false pregnancy. You might be sad at not having kits but at least a false pregnancy is probably healthier for the jill than staying in season . It is also likely that once her body realises that she's not actually pregnant she will come in season again and you can try mating for a second time . All the best Edited June 5, 2010 by comanche Quote Link to post

kurtrog70 6
Thanks for the reply mate. We put them together on the 12th of April, but they were only in for a couple of hours so we then stuck them back together a week later (7days) they were with each other for around 5 hours that day. Do you think she is having a phantom pregnancy? ATB Kurt Quote Link to post

RaiderBoy 19
Thanks for the reply mate. Do you think she is having a phantom pregnancy? ATB Kurt that jill had problems last year mate with a phantom pregnancy and all i come to the conclusion that his hob was shooting blanks but if its happened this year too it may well be a problem with the jill and like whats been said erlier she may just be late or time of conception was wrong Richard Quote Link to post
comanche 3,096
It's possible that by putting her in with the hob on the 12th for too short a time the jill was stimulated into a phantom pregnancy so when you tried again a few days later she was in no state to conceive anyway. Are you sure she was properly in season ? Did you see(and hear!) them mating?. Was there a bit of neck-biting ? P1 . I mentioned that I thought having a pseudopregnancy might be a little healthier than staying in season . Sorry for not getting back straight away . It's not so much a "conclusion" as an idea . I can't help feeling that in a natural state an animal living within range of a viable population of its own species would not be in- season for a long period . It is however not rare for a female -especially an inexperienced one- dealing with a first litter to lose her young and the animal is more likely to be physically able to deal with the natural failure of a litter than the artificially imposed state of a lengthy season . As I said , its only a theory . Right or wrong we all have our little ideas about things. All the best Quote Link to post
kurtrog70 6
Thanks For all your replies Yep seen them going for it and the noises, he was carrying her around the lot. Still no sign of little ones, very doubtful that any kits will come. ATB Kurt Edited June 7, 2010 by kurtrog70 Quote Link to post
