1st cross deerhoundxgreyhound

i know a couple of saluki crosses and a couple of deerhound crosses and seen them run and the best out of them has been the deerhound cross ive had a saluki cross and it was my frst and my last and ive got a deerhound cross in now and its in a complete different league to the saluki cross and im very glad that i got rid of the saluki cross and got this dog in it alldepends on how much time you put into your dog so it addaps to the stuff it is running then you will end up with a good dog

getting a house soon so i will be able to get myself another lurcher. i stay with my dad the now and limted to how many dogs i can have. ive got a salukixgrey whippetxgrey and shes 22tts but a would like a bigger dog. does anyone run a deerhoundxgreyhound and could give me there opinions on them and show me some pictures of some deerhound crosses. would be appreciated

I'll upset a few folk now, talking first crosses only, if you want something that looks great and moves amazingly, then get one ,if you are serious about hunting , forget it. They're either too big for what your hunting in this country, or if hunting something big, they're not agile enough.

 

 

I might be inclined to trust you on that but I have no knowledge of course cuz I dont live there. How do you rate them though bred to a bullxgreyhound?

 

I can't comment on that cross mate, never tried it. Tried pure deerhound and first crosses, found them disappointing, moved on to saluki crosses and can't think why anyone would not want them.

 

Fair enough. We dont do alot of criss crossing over here really so I know nuttin about "lurchers" but just cant see why a dog like that wouldnt work.

 

We just don't have the open spaces for such big dogs as deerhounds or first crosses, most fields are probably the size of your back yards, the fens being the main exception, but the saluki crosses with their far superior stamina dominate on that expanse of flat ,open land. The pray down there is the brown hare so there is just no need for the great size of the deerhound, I've seen dogs of 22" do a decent job, not the best but adequate. About 26" is probably the the ideal size for hares, when you consider that I've seen deerhounds 34" you start to appreciate the problem . Then you have to look at strength to weight ratio, a dog twice the weight is not twice as strong, the heavier the weight that's travelling in any direction, the harder it is to stop or change direction, so a big dog cannot change direction as good as a smaller one. When coursing dogs single handed, which is the norm over hear, all these things have a bearing on the outcome.

your right mate, in scotland its hard for the dogs with the amount of fences, tree lines, enbankments ect. need a dog quick of the mark to get a turn on its quarry and get it back into the park. would proberly better trying to look for a deerhound cross with more greyhound in it with a bit of whippet through in there along the way

Bit of a sweeping statement, that ! I've seen deer x's doing everything that other x's can do, and sometimes more, up here in Northumberland....and BTW, I'm a big Saluki fan, so no breed blindness here ! LOL !

I took a deerhound bitch to the whippet racing champ Rhine Gold, but the bitch was not behaving and the dogs owner was rightly worried about the dog being injured, so it all came to nought.I still wonder what might have been.

the first x (( to me is to big and muckle, for the game we run, average height bitch = 27to 30" dog 28" to 33" or tad more, and they do not come to them selves untill they are around 2 years, 3/4grey 1/4 deerhound are a faster dog but again about 2 year old before they do there job right, ((( and they can do there job, Roe, and Hare, all pre ban, I had that breed in the early 70s but todays world Saluki x grey/with a bit of collie in the mix, and they can do there job,((( I dont do foxes, only edible game, for the table and the freezer,and of course our good ole rabbits,, nothing worse to bring a pup up and at 18 months you decide he is not good enough, and thats what you will find with a lot deerhound xs

IMHO the f1x deerhound is same as a lot of f1x their not the finnished article cross them back to other lurchers ie grey/collies or grey/beddys then very usefull allround lurcher types can be bred far better than the f1x or the 3 quarter breds which i have seen a few run over the years.atb dell

If i was back in the UK, i would go for a good Deerhound X Wheaten, with no Greyhound blood at all,....that would be a nice cross i think?

own dog and bitch of dhgh first crosses owned sal crosses col crosses.size seems to be there down fall these days.but not there gameness feet and jackets nature.saw a few smaller crosses strugling up here.hopeing to put a sal grew into the dhgh in a few years time.

saw deerhound crosses infact most crosses in the last 25 years and i live one hour and 20 minutes from newcastle area , and if your just wanting game catchers coursers the saluk cross or the collie saluk cross are the best ive saw for edible game , leave the deerhound in its pure state and the half cross but once you fine the scottish deerhound down then thats when you get real good killing machines, look at the dogs thats went forward the saluk cross , the ones who have went back the way deerhound same for alot of colie types , etc , no grit or bottom when it gets tough , and the grounds testing ,stick to your faster saluk and the better bred collie types youll not get much better for filing the gam elarder and if bred [bANNED TEXT] will flush foxes etc,

I've had a first cross and it was far too slow for the fields I hunt,the 3/4 cross however is a decent dog and will catch most things you'll hunt in this country,some can be slow to mature and will only do things at their own pace,I found a bit of something else was required to make a decent dog,dan,its a whole different ball game over here as to what you need in a lurcher compared to the USA,atb,wirralman
