Joe.....spend the money, get the best. Your dog will start to put its foot down soon enough. Let it rest for 8 weeks, but walk it from 5 weeks a little. The muscle wastage will look aweful, but dont worry about it. Your dog should be running rabbits on soft fields by mid febuary, so you will get a couple of weeks out of it....unless you wish to wait until next season... personally i would be running the dog as soon as it looks right. Plenty of muscle on those back legs. Give it a good balanced diet and it should heal up just fine and dandy. keep your chin up, i know how you feel..... JD

joe i might be looking to loan a dog out for a season if your interested,, mainly a lamping dog and a real gent to own and work.trial if needed, im a bit stretched myself so just a thought.

Feel for you mate. Though I would say 8 weeks is not a cert. My dog broke his foot and went into a cast. He had that on for 4 weeks, then was bandaged heavily first week after the cast was off which was reduced over the following 2-3 weeks. During that time I lead walked him only. Once he had no support, his muscle wastage was noticeable but more importantly the tendons become very weak so that he couldnt put his foot down. He limped on 3 legs for a week before putting it down and I would say its now 5 weeks after cast off and he still not good enough to work. I would say that he has another month to go. So in total about 3 months for mine. Obviously each dog is individual and a lot gos down to monitoring recovery very closely.
