gun man on killing spree

Recommended Posts

why do licences run for 5 years between renewal it was to save money in my opinion it is far too long between applications and I would be all for spot checks from an FLO as well.

May or thoughts and prayers be with the people affected by this horrendous crime

Not sure about the rest of the country, but down here we do have spot checks at times, had one myself as have quite a few I know. Can't speak for other forces though, depends on how much time their FEOs have.

I didn't realize that some forces already do spot checks in over 25 years of gun ownership I have never had a check other than at renewal perhaps each force could employ another feo to make the checks better enforcement of existing law must be better than new legislation.

I think we're quite fortunate to have I think four FEOs down here for, what is a well populated area, but there aren't that many certificates on issue compared with somewhere like Mid Wales or Yorkshire etc where every man and his dog has a gun of some sort.

But with cutbacks in public services, we may not have four before long, who knows.

I have heard this man had a criminal record for thefthmm.gif I was led to believe the criteria for possesing sgc fac were very strict but seeing some of the people in my home town who have got them this is obviousley not the case.

I don't think it was a fault with our gun laws, but if they need to be seen to do something, then maybe introduce a mental health check every 12 - 24 months?

They shouldn't be banning any sort of gun all because of one incident (as bad as this incident is) These guns aren't the problem. The problem is with that piece of shit Derrick Bird who decided he'd go around killing people, not the current gun laws (which are already the tightest in Europe) or the guns he used.

In saying that I think any suggestions that people have made about how we should have a more American style gun law, is just ridiculous IMO. If we had laws like they have things like this would probably happen more often. Look at the massacres than happen in the USA, an armed citizen has never played the hero and ended the killing, the killer almost always ends up killing himself after he's finished killing innocent people. So with that in mind I certainly don't think arming yourself is a way to stop this sort of thing happening.

Maybe every tom, dick and harry carrying guns in there back pockets is not the answer but surely a few officers from the local cop shop could be trained to deal with any situations such as this? All it would take is 1 gun, locked securely in the police station. I think i read somewhere yesterday about the time it took for the armed response team to get there and it was quite a while, way to long to stop a mad gunman running around the place. Even if this way could save 1 life it would be well worth it!!

i hear what you guys are saying he is was a whatever and will rot in hell

but we cant argue about gun laws needing tightened up as this prick slipped the net

this said people change, we all do and i think us folk with guns need to go talk to some kind of shrink for an hour or two and have a yarn about life and a cupa tea, about once a year and then this sort off thing might be stopped and then again you just cant stop human nature

my thoughts what do you guys think???

thoughts with the familys who lost there loved ones

SPOT ON MATE :good:

I'm not a gun owner but it's gun owners like yourself that are looking for ways to stop things like this happening in the future that will make a difference. Rather than those gun owners who just moan about the anti gun brigade trying to take away their shooters, without coming up with any real idea on what should be done.

What you've suggested could well make all the difference so gun owners can still enjoy their sport and their guns with out a repeat of what happened yesterday.

All the best to you mate

Me personally i dont think the goverment should do anything,by all means have your enquiry. But at the end of the day this was a guy who for whatever reason flipped his lid ad went on a rampage with a shotgun.any other place other than the rural area he was in he would have been met the lads with the heckler and koch and he would be either dead or in custody.(but most of the gunmen turn it on themselfs ie hungerford.dunblane)it was tragic and the familys and friends will have to live with it unfortunaetly.think the gun laws we have right now dont need to be changed they work fine imo.no matter what controls you have in place,if someone has a mental breakdown theres nothing we can do to stop that.Worked on a site few year back and around lunchtime we heard the site agent was sat in the middle of a school playground breaking up his pieces out his lunch bag and when the police got there he was sat there with a circle of bread around him.ok he didnt kill anyone but if you knew this guy like me you would be suprised he was a rough big stong man who worked on sites all his life.Just one morning he snapped and had a total breakdown.itr was actually pretty heart breaking to see him being taken away.as i said there fine line from sanity to insanity.

My point is if the Gun owners don't attempt to do anything about it then they may have things change for them!!! And by anti's that will be unfair and over the top.

If the Gun Owners are seen to be looking for a solution so things like this don't happen again then maybe they wont be hit with such ridiculous bans and such like.

Maybe introduce a mental health check every 12 months?

If you're guns mean something to you then you've got to do something about it to see to it that they don't get banned.

I'd like to think that the shooting community would pull together and suggest what can be done to help towards preventing things such as this happening in the future.

My thoughts are that the gun laws are already very tight in this country, we have very few options left with regards to the control of firearms, we cannot introduce security and vetting checks because they are already in existence, for example.

The idea of an annual mental health check can work i'm sure but 12 months is still a very long time when the mind can turn within minutes. I personally would agree to letting my doctor share what would have been confidential information with the police if it would in his view adversely affect my fitness to hold certificates.

I believe at the moment, the only time your doctor will give information to the police is on grant or renewal when you sign to say that he can. That could be changed.

Its certainly a situation where we have very few options right from the start.

fair point buddy, yea wouldnt do any harm to be seen to control your own sport maybe someone should carry the torch and submit some ideas to your mp or chief constable.can only help.i used to have a shotgun certificate.but doing the doors i picked up an assault charge and they werent long in revocking it.but i dont have any grudge against the authouritys that was the condition when i got my certificate.
