what a load of old bolloxs :11: any dog that spews foxes or pulls up on hares or deer you can get to catch rabbits,the only people that think rabbiting is hard are rabbiters,come on people,i have seen shit catch rabbits,

if i had to choose a dog purely for running deer it would probably be a 3/4 greyhound 1/4 saluki, because i see far more roe than any other species of deer when i'm out.

 

but if i was just lamping them most crosses would suit me, the ones i've got now even.

 

as for rabbits been harder to catch than a lamped deer i dont agree, imo the ground as a lot to do with with the run e.g rabbits on short grass like golf courses are harder to catch than they would be on a stubble imo, but if both (rabbit & deer) were on level terms on the same ground i'd put my money on the deer being the harder choice.

If rabbits are so hard to catch why do we all start our pups off on them ? Ive always started every lurcher Ive ever owned with rabbits then progressed onto bigger and better things.

The reason a higher percentage of rabbits are missed is because a higher amount are run in a night and deer do not just get away when they are out of the beam even some of the best dogs & I mean dogs that did large amounts in a season not just 20-30 will miss a few.... all the lads that have done large amount of deer reguarly will tell you they are a very testing quarry & there are some deer that will never be caught the ones that have had a dog up there arse a few times ...to put this in perspective I had a nights lampin rabbits a few months ago with a lad on here who had travelled up from England .... my bitch had just wheened her pups but still had a bit of milk I took her along just to get her out ...I ended up slipping her maybe I shouldnt have as she still had milk but I did any way she had 7 slip 5 of them long slips & she caught 6 rabbits but I wouldnt of even considered slipping her on a deer ( even if it was nt banned )there is no comparison running deer to rabbits non at all

As for best deer dog imho you need a dog with a bit of size & not just a dog that will hold you need a dog that will drop them, get round to the throat & dispatch them it self

haveing caught loads of both over the last few decades for wages and fun the best on roe is 5 in one night with a s with a collie threeqaurter cross and a genuine half son of tor of dartmooor very good dogs , the same bitch the collie cross to knock rabbits for fun caught twenty plus a night ,i would say a good yearling or second year buck knowing were hees going takes a bit of catching ,localy ive ran roe that no what adog is theyrun with theri heads down they run. hitting the wood with out checking their stride and if the dog aint quick enough their in the wood and away ,ive hunted fir woods on moors on the ochle hills 300 yard slips some chase on a roe no big bags , but good sport as their were peat hags everywere and very rough but great chases , rabbits are great sport and on winter wheat etc can run and throw a dog of with a quick slip ,ive had several lads up with dogs and went home empty handed same can be said with rabbits both prey are hard buit if youve hunted long enough you put the dog in the position so he gets a chance then its up to breeding and feeding all the best ,theirs not realy an answer to the qaestion as i could hunt booth in certain places and catch few all the best

the rabbits were caught with a 1/2 cross bull greyhound, and the deer were caught with a 3/8 5/8 bull greyhound and another bull cross (not sure of the percentages) we got five but only managed to bring 4 back, and both dogs were run single handed.

 

this might look like a bit of an acheivment but if these dogs run the same quarry in the daylight i doubt there would of been any kills to show

Lucky the method you use gives you an advantage.. on the lamp their heads are practically up their arse... my jist of it, NO one should be advertising any of these sort of statements about lamping, and from a historic note, most average dogs will take them for fun, IMO hares on the same land are harder to catch day or night...

a friends 21" beddy/whippet would pull roe for fun, before the ban.

 

 

Is this the same friend who catches 500 rabbits a night with his longnet? I expect this same beddy/whippet will drive the truck home afterwards as well. LOL!

well i have to say lucky,that them deer you have there,would not be much of a challeng,to any fair lurcher,but talking from experience,and talking to the essex lads that lost there 2 dogs in the rut to a fallow buck,and as some one who has lost dogs to these mighty deer in the past,fallow and red at the right time of year,are imho,the only british animal,that can and will kill your dog,fox and other things that bite back,will imo give your dog a good work out,but they will not kill your dogs,so i still say that a deer is more of a test then a rabbit,and at the right time of year,there the only thing that will test a dog,
