JonathanKent 16
Sounds like your on the money with that one. You shouldn't have any problems with the Firearms officer, especially if its got a BS Kite Mark. Hope the application goes well ATB Jonno Quote Link to post
lampingking 3
its just a sticker on it that says BS not a kite mark is this still ok then. i brought it off my mate Quote Link to post

I believe that some companies don't use the BS KiteMark as their products far exceed the requirement needed to get it so see it as detrimental to their product. J. Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
As long as it offers a similar level of security you should be fine. More important is what it's secured to, they want a good solid wall, and the general security of the place. If you have double glazing all round you should be fine. It's up to you to convince the FEO that the security is suitable, and he should take into account number of weapons, the area, the overall security, where abouts the cabinet is in the house (not in general sight to visitors, properly secured with expanding bolts to a solid interior wall etc.) and anyone else in the house that might have access to the safe (remember, if he asks anyone else in the house they don't know where you keep the key, I've heard of a few trying to catch people out with that one!) lampingking 3
ok thanks for the help on that . my house does not have dubble glazing , will that make any problems for me??? thanks Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
Sorry, that was slightly misleading. It's not actually double glazing that they look at, but good strong window locks. As long as the windows have decent locks you should be fine. Of course that's for an FAC rather than a sgc, I think the sgc conditions might be less rigorous! Quote Link to post

medic1281 5
When I applied for my first SGC and FAC the flo came round for my interview 3 days after my house was broken into. The b*****ds had got in through a locked double glazed window and ripped out half my kitchen to get at a small safe in one of the units! The flo and I chatted about it all and he was still happy to grant them both!! So don't be too paranoid about it. ATB Phil Quote Link to post
BellySlater 15
Just got my SGC, the firearms officer was fine. I actually pitched it to him that i didn't want to own a gun, just wanted the licence to borrow the odd gun on beaters day and buy some cartridges. Had the certificate in the post without having a cabinet. ( he did say that if i bought a gun without advising that i had bought a cabinet and it had been checked I would be in the poop, but it's good to get the certificate.) Now I have all the time in the world to get and fit a secure cabinet. I wouldn't worry to much about double glazing etc. Just be honest and poilte and you should be fine. All the best, Belly Quote Link to post

JonathanL 4
ok thanks for the replys , any other advice about what to do / say whilst i am speaking to the officer ext .thanks You'll be fine - don't stress it. You have to remember that you aren't expected to provide security that would put the bank of England to shame. You are expected to have reasonable security, nothing more, nothing less. There isn't even any actual requirement in law for a cabinet - in fact, there is no specific criteria laid down in law, other than "reasonable" which is a condition appended to the cert. Cabinets of a particular construction are specified in the guidance because it's easy, inexpensive and consistent. However, if you want to put a strong door on your cellar, for instance, there is no reason why that wouldn't be accepted if the security it proves is "reasonable". If you can show that your cellar door provides the same resistance as a steel cabinet then how could that not be seen as reasonable? I was going to turn my small front bedroom into a gun room and do away with my cabinets but expense and hassle changed my mind. If I move again though it's something I'm going to get done before I move in. The point of the security is so that anyone who burgles your house and finds your guns can't pinch them as part of the burglary or, so that someone else in your house who doesn't have a cert can't get access to them. The fact is that if someone knows you have them and decides that he's going to get them one way or another then he will and no amount of security will stop something like that. J. Quote Link to post
