Guest fence_hopper
seen quite a few young dogs start in the game, never seen one that didnt react or not show much interest. has anyone had a dog like this at 12 to 18 months and make a good dog, as if it was one of mine and it showed no interest at that age i'd have deep concerns Edited May 28, 2010 by fence_hopper Quote Link to post

Guest fence_hopper
thanks mate. i aint been around long enough (which i can admit) to come accros a dog like that, so thought i'd ask as it dont sound right imo of a lurcher pup. this is the comment why i thought i'd ask I have seen dogs not reacting at 12 mths and even 18 mths not show much interest. All have turned out top class workers mate.... Edited May 28, 2010 by fence_hopper Quote Link to post

Hollie 21
I think there is a huge difference in not knowing the score and not showing any interest, I have never come across a sighthound that doesn't react to movement, whether they are any good at handling that particular situation is a different matter but they will all react = show an interest Quote Link to post
jusar whippets 10
The only ones i have seen like this are the ones that spend their lives in kennels and get a 10 minute run in the garden and then taken out into the field and expected to do the bizzy just cos they are a "Lurcher" My Saluki/Grey was a late starter and didn't really want to know at all, then one day it was like a switch was flicked on, and no stopping her now. cassshantia 16
my whippet x shows interest but is not a killer ,shxt hot on rats but only mouths bunnies and long ears pre ban when she s had enough of the course (she s 8 now ) if she held every rabbit she touched i would of had 2 or 3 litters off her she drove me up the wall ,ive tried all sorts now she s just a grub eater ,she still gets the same excercise as others but i dont work her only down garden wi the rats its a shame like she was bred well enough and coursed with great spirit but killing /holding etc pants Quote Link to post

Cochyn 0
My old man had a collie grey whippet 20 years ago that didn't show interest in any quarry until he was 15 months. Once his prey drive kicked in it did so with a vengence and he would try to kill anything he thought he could. He was a blood thirsty bugger and could be a knighmare at times - cats, foxes, red deer, yorkshire terriers, pet rabbits, post men, anything. The bitch I have now would just stop and stare at rabbits until she was about 6 months (not that I was running her on them). I took her out to watch a bit of lamping and ferreting at 8 months and she's been mad keen since. Edited May 28, 2010 by Cochyn Quote Link to post
Guest fence_hopper
so the prey rive turns on like a switch where talking about young pups at 12 to 18 months here. Quote Link to post

At 10 months I took her for a bit of lamping (3 squatters or easy runs per night) and ferreting (she was bored at first) and she took to it quite well. She'll do me anyway. Quote Link to post
Cochyn 0
so the prey rive turns on like a switch where talking about young pups at 12 to 18 months here. I saw my old man's old dog over a year old not interested in rabbits at all (and he was given plenty of chances I won't detail on here) and he turned out very keen. Not the best worker but keen. Not sure it was like a 'switch' but seemed to just suddenly show an interest. Quote Link to post
