basically i was wondering if anyone else uses this gun, mines old but had a service recently, i am told its around 11 ft/lb more than enough to kill a rabbit close range, but last night i went out for a little wander around a neighbours fields, i spied a rabbit through the hedge, about 15 yards away, too good an opportunity to miss, it was sat stock still ears up, must have heard me coming, anyway i took the shot, aiming for the eye, and heard a hit and saw the bunny bounce up about a ft into the air, unfortunately he went out of my line of sight when he landed so i ran along the hedge to where i knew i could get through, jumped the fence (had a close call with the barbed wire and my bollocks) and walked over to where i was sure i would find a dead bunny... he was gone. now i am certain i got a head shot, if not right in the eye, but not a trace of him.

is the air rifle underpowered or did i just pierce his ear or something? i am reluctant to get a new airgun as money is tight, but this is the second time it has let me down (although the last time was before its service). has anybody else had this problem?

the gun , distance and power mean nothing unless you have accurate shot placement.

have you checked your zero....and at what distance ???

and have you practised so you can consistantly place your shots in small groups ????

Dont want to be aiming for the eye mate, you could have hit him through one eye and out the other without killing him and the rabbit running for its life using its sense of smell as a guide.

You need to totally nail them and hit the brain, between the eye and the ear.

11ftlb is a good power to be running at. Hit the targets and try again, maybe watch some vids about where to shoot a rabbit etc??

All the best

Yep the Mod 60 is a pretty decent gun

Trigger a lil rough perhaps but I'd buy one if it came up at the right price

Manufactured by the Hatsan Arms Company, accuracy wise, it will out shoot the shooter more times than not

Aiming for the eye at 15 yards probably drilled right on through  I once took a shot at a bunny and it went down  out for the count or so I thought! The wind had carried the pellet just to the right of my aim point as it gusted. .22 pellet went straight through one eye and left through the other eye. I thought it was a clean kill as I couldn't see the impact point and the bunny didnt even twitch until about 5 second later when it began kicking :icon_eek: then got up and began to run. I scared every other bunny and the sheep in the field breaking cover at speed to get to the bunny and pull its neck.

So even if it jumped and went down, after you squeezed the trigger; it could have made it home

Imagine a line directly between the back of the eye and the base of the ear, aim at the middle of that line and if you place the pellet anywhere along that line or even just above or just below, the bunny will not get back up again.

If you've not shot for a while, spend a bit of time on paper punching to renew your skills and that will help boost your confidance in your rifle and your own abilities

Every one says shoot between the eye and bottom of the ear. I seem to get cleaner kills when i aim just at the bottom of the ear not a twitch with my .177 but that just me

Yep true,

Anywhere in that area will drop em.

When I did a few disections etc, I found the base of the ear to be almost parallel with the cerebellum which of course is right where the spinal cord joins the brain hit this area and the nervous system won't even react hence no twitching. Same as placing the shot in the spinal column from behind, which of course is a shot not recomended for any new hunter, until they are proficiant ;)

sorry for late reply, been busy and tired, I spent a couple of hours testing my groupings the day before, (at various different distances, the gun was shooting pretty damn good) and that evening before i saw mr bunny, the in one eye out the other theory sounds crazy! but i accept that its probably what happened though i have never had it happen, but, well... maybe i have now, i generally aim for the topside of the eye closest to the ear...obviously i want to hit the brain, so i will follow the advice you guys have given and aim closer to the base of the ear in the future.

thanks for the advice

dont have any idea when i can get out again, (dont drive, live in town) but when i do i will let you know how it went ait?

also, does anybody know what the max killing range of this rifle is? i have been playing it safe and not shooting far atall max about 30m but would love to know if i can start shooting things a tad further away...it would make stalking stuff alot easier.

Point awarded for listening to and taking onboard the advice. The in one eye and out the other does sound crazy, but if you look at this you will see why its a common mistake to make.

You will see that between the eyes is only a very thin wall of bone with a hole in it, this hole allows the optical nerve from each eye to meet and just behind that hole is a hole that goes into the cranial cavity where the nerve joins the brain.

Cross section for you

DSC02809.jpg

Now the brain mainly occupies the large cavity behind the eye but there is a tiny (for want of a better word) Tendril of brain that goes above they eye and this is the Olfactory Lobe deals with smell etc.. Points towards the Nasal cavity.

So there is no brain matter between the eyes and a little .177 at high velocity will go straight through causing minimal damage, perhaps what we know to be Concussion. May lead to death, but may not.

Heres a drawing of the Brain

The larger mass is whats behind the eye. Hit this, bunnie goes down with massive brain damage and Central Nervous system (CNS) Shock dead in seconds or fractions of a second.

At the Back is the area known as the cerrabellum or (Little Brain), this is another Instant switch off area. And behind that is the Spinal Column nerves that carry the signals around the body. If you hit the larger brain mass, the cerebellum will still transmit signals to the body, hence the rabbit will jump, stick its leg in the air, convulse or twitch. Hit the spinal column A very difficult shot at any range and the signals can not get to the body and virtually no twitching.

Until you are very proficiant, go for the Larger brain mass behind the eye.

All the best HH

Oh as to range, Stick to about 30 yards or meters till your very comfortable with the paper targets then move them out to 35 yards / meters.

That would be the most I would reccomend for a sub 12 springer
