lately my 7 month lab has been a bit of a twat!

his retriving was getting better, but in the past few days he's started f*****g off with the dummy!

i started his retriving in a chickenwire alley kind of thing in the garden but as soon as i stand back from the entrance or give him a retrive out of it he pisses off with it and runs round the garden with it (our garden is very big) and he try to turn it into a game of me chasing him!

when he bring a retrive to me he gets his tummy scratched for a bit then i take the dummy and then he gets a biscuit! i dont get why he dosen't want to come back with it!?! i took me best part of 5-10 mins to get it off him today!

should i try a check line? any other ideas would be good!

Does he not recall or drop to the whistle mate. If not I wouldn't be doing retrieve training yet.

A gundog should never be taught to drop to the whistle, no use if it brings back a runner and drops it. Think your pup might not no who the boss is yet, get that sorted and all will fall into place.

Maybe a person asking for advice wouldn't know that mate. Av seen plenty people at shoots telling there dogs to drop birds at there feet and they do and they spend 2 mins running about a field after a bird looking like a right tit.

What I was getting at mate, was the need to get the basics drilled in before starting the retrieve training, had he got the recall 100%, he wouldn't have the problem, also if they slip up on the recall ,if you drop them on the whistle first, they're much more likely to obey the recall from that position.

his dad is still quite ouppish at times not just with snow fever (he's hilariouse with snow :clapper: ) but he has a sertain puppish atitude to him... which i like! i dont know how old he is though at the least 3

but today i did what the book called reverse traning (sit the dog down, give them the dummy, walk away however far & call them to you) out in the open and he did it really well so i gave him a normal retrive which he did very well! :boogie:

long lead and short retrieves. bailing twine will even do for a lead.

throw dummy a few feet and then send dog. once picked up give the recall. if he returns then great if not you need to guild him in with the lead. dont yank the lead, the aim is just to guild him in but trying to do with out force or you might end up with a spit. he will get the idea. once he know where he should be then you can give a little more length or retrieve. it might take a while but it should work out for you.

have a quick think. if your misses wants you to look as something in the shop window what would you do if she grabbed yous arm and tried to yank you over for a look, you probably would pull back and tell her to go forth and multiply, i wouldn't as my wife would beat the cr4p out me but i would not be happy about it and would be moody for a while. however, if she was to hold my jacket and soft and gentle, lead me to her for a look i would find it funny and go for a look.

i not great at typing what im thinking so i hope you get the idea.

all the bast
