Seems you are new here, it also seems a rather strange situation, from what I could make of it, is there perhaps a little more to this than you have mentioned??

Sounds like the BASC is a good option, and I do find it strange about the HMR and .17 centrefire business you mention! But....is there something more????????????

In the first instance, I would contact any shooting organisation you might belong to and tell them what has happened.

Failing that, down load a copy of the home office guidelines and literature pertaining to a .17 HMR.

Obviously the FEO that attended your home is an idiot and hasn't the foggiest idea of what he/she is talking about.

I would then call the firearms licensing department and ask for a meeting with the head of the department to discuss your resent application and refusal.

1) There is NO requirement to have an alarm fitted, however you do need to have adequate security, for example window locks, good solid doors and door lock and a suitable cabinet.

2) .17 HMR most certainly exists and the department will be fully aware fo this.

He's wrong about the .17 cal.

There is no requirement to have an alarm fitted and I'd imagine he'd have trouble forcing one on you after 15 years without.

Personally, I don't really see the point in playing games with the police. Tell him to send you an official letter of refusal and that you will appeal it at court. Chances are they'll cave in as I can't see how they'll win from what you've told us.

how many rifles and shotguns do you own ? i hear if you have over 10 they like you to have some sort of alam on the hose. or the room there in.

the stupid thing about it is if you had 5 rifles and 5 mods that in some firearms departments eyes is classed as 10 ! which is total stupid

The feo has obviously made a mistake regarding the .17 HMR, a quick phone call to the firearms licensing manager or one of the staff will quickly sort it out. I'm afraid they are human and do make mistakes.

Firearms security is treated on an individual basis and address, type of property and number of guns kept are all taken into account. Many police forces now insist on an alarm being fitted when once you go over a certain number of guns. My force insist on an alarm if you have over 7 guns. This is no big deal and an alarm fitted to your cabinet should suffice. However if you live in an high crime area they may require a more specialised alarm. Again have a chat with your firearms licensing manager who will advise you which way to go.

Have a read through the Home Office Firearms Security Handbook.
