saxosportsaxo 2
I am putting in for a variation on my license for a section 1 8 shot semi auto shotgun and i was wondering what you guys had said to justify the reason to have this. I do a lot of clays, pigeon and crow shooting with my shotgun and i wanted a 3+ to give me extra shots when required. I phoned my local firearms division and they said they are tightening down on section 1 handouts. But she went on to say that if i could give a good explanation to why i require a 3+ then i might be allowed it.. Can anyone share and good reasons why they should have a section 1? Any thoughts would be most welcome. Thanks. Saxo Edited May 21, 2010 by saxosportsaxo Quote Link to post
adam scott 1
i would also like to know this as in the future i can see my self applying for the same variation. so why could u not justify this by simply saying you are now doin alot more pest control i.e pigeons & rooks and so the extra shots will be needed to deal with the extra pest control area's or land u are now asserting yourself to. i'm not saying lie. but bend the truth a little. yes u should only apply for it if u really need the shots. it sounds like you do. so why not state that there is increased pigeon activity in you permission area? and if u dont deal with the problem the land owner will find someone else. these are only suggestions. i would like to know myself what other people have written?? RicW 67
The rules say "Flocking pigeons or corvids" damaging crops. Of course, the fuzz only follow the rules whan they feel like it . . . Ric Quote Link to post

SportingShooter 0
I've seen this question raised a few times in the past, when someone takes on new ground with lots of crows or pigeons, instantly they think they need five more shots to deal with them. In reality, when you fire at either species and especially if you fire more than twice, whatever was nearby is going to suitably far away for you to be able to reload. Sec.1 Shotguns tend to be issued where the applicant is a Keeper or servant of an estate where a particular species is in plague proportion. Many estates have them for Rabbits for instance. Also, you will need to provide specific land on which it will be used, if you have a closed FAC as well as listing the individual species that you wish to shoot with it. They are treated in the exact same way as a rifle. Can't say I've ever felt the sudden urge to have a fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth shot when shooting Pigeons and Crows and you could say I've shot many thousands of them. CharlieT 32
As Sporting Shooter states Section 1 Shotguns tend to be authorised where the applicant can demonstrate a need for a large capacity shotgun to control large numbers of pests and in most circumstances the police view these as avian ones. However, territorial conditions are NOT imposed and land is NOT inspected. When primary good reason has been shown the police will grand, on request, clay shooting as a condition. I would suggest you have a read of the relevant sections in the HO Guidelines and the Firearms act. I quote from the guidelines; d) (Section 1) Smooth-bore guns In the case of an application in respect of a smooth-bore gun to which section 1 of the 1968 Act applies, it will not normally be necessary for specific areas of land over which the applicant has permission to shoot to be examined. and; Large magazine shot guns may be required to deal with serious pest problems with wood pigeon or corvids (rooks and crows). They are have either been giving them out when they shouldn't - naughty - or; they've decided that some "good reasons" are no longer good enough! Personally, it just sounds like waffle to put you off. Bottom line - if you have "good reason" they cannot refuse you. J. Edited May 22, 2010 by JonathanL Quote Link to post
