sounder79 80
small terriers are ok for hunting rabbits but you want a bit of leg for foxes, somethin that wont come back after five minutes.and you want a dog that gives a bit of tonuge so your lurcher can watch the break.terrier/springer is the way to go.even a quater of gun dog in a terrier is enough. romany52 313
terriers every time I've worked borders , pats ,fells, lakelands, russels, and a mate had both smooth and wire fox terriers plus crosses. All worked very well but they would never better a small springer. Anybody who has done any amount of cover bashing with terriers will know that once a terrier is head and shoulders down a hole it's blind and deaf, you've got to wade in and scruff the little bast, then you've finished with that patch and probably the next as well, because as soon as you but it down it's straight back. Anybody that says terriers are better than an average springer, have never seen an average springer work, and that's not to mention a good one! 1 Quote Link to post

CarraghsGem 92
mine (just for rabbits) is my pet-turned bushing terrier, parson type bitch, saying that her parents were workers so i shouldnt be too surprised! i picked up a hound x jrt pup there a month back to learn the job if hes able for it, hes a fat little thing at 4mths but is starting to use his nose when hes out with us, just wish he'd show a bit more of an independant streak! dave a 24
we use barking springers to knock foxes out for lurchers,i have also always kept digging dogs and they would usually be kept tied out in the country but i've never seen any terrier match a good springer for cover.i know barking on game is a big fault for the gun dog men but ours are fox hunting dogs only,we bred two great barking springers in the spring, eight strong pups, hopefully most will make the grade.
