jambay5 191
am thinking a whip/bed as well as bush could do a bit on the lamp and still be quick enough to catch in the open!! Quote Link to post
stainlee 27
I use a whppet/staffx , lacks pace to be prolific on the lamp , but really useful in the day. ATB Quote Link to post
wirral countryman 2,110
I bush most days and have always worked the cover a lot(40yrs) and you need a small dog to get in the brambles and thick cover not a beddy/whippet,do you understand the concept of working thick cover and pushing the quarry towards a waiting lurcher?a terrier or small dog with a good nose is required for cover work,it has to fit through small runs under and through thick cover, big dogs can't do this, atb, wirralman Quote Link to post
cúagusgiorraí 57
Depends if you are poaching or not (barking). I use a Teckel and he is deadly. He will find anything and has a great voice. Very obedient as well if you put the training into him early as a pup. I have tried a lot of dogs in cover. I recommend a large sized terrier that doesnt go to ground. Sometimes the staffie cross terriers can be silent but deadly. Fox terriers are fairly good as well, and you cant beat a good Jack Russell. HBG 350
always liked a spaniel something small i had a sprocker for years the best little dog i've had for bushing,i have a little jack russel here its tiny but not a patch on a good spaniel, terrier's usually hunt truer but are usually a lot slower than a spaniel, also you dont have the trouble of a spaniel getting to ground, good luck which ever way you go. poacherman 353
get yoursel a cocker or a springer. there the best cover dogs out. my springer brought my lurcher on leaps and bounds by flushing rabbits and marking holes for ferreting. unless you want a wee dog that going to bark when its on rabbits or other game get yourself a terrier, but if your lurcher is tuned in enough it would need the help of the dog barking atb poacherman Quote Link to post

poacher3161 1,766
Havingg used various bushing dogs since i were ten years old [bANNED TEXT] gangs of us unguns would hunt the pit tips and bankings with our packs of mongrels and over the years i have hunted with lads with packs of terriers and then tried hunting a single terrier with my two lurchers wich never worked due to the terriers high killing instinct they were more intrested in wat the lurcher were doing knowing that they would give them something to get their teeth into. Then 25 years ago a lad offerd me the smallest bitch pup in a litter of springers it was the best £20 i have ever spent though i did bring her up like a terrier and she would peg anything from partridge to hares and [bANNED TEXT] i took her down south to hunt muntjack she was in her element prompting a lot of lurcher lads then to get into spaniels due alot to badger setts on a lot of the land wich could be liability with terriers.I keep a strain of small spaniels decended from this bitch they suite me but might not be some one elses choice of bushing dog.atvb dell Quote Link to post
