THE GRIFF 8
To cut a long story short, I am wanting some ferrets to work them. I have recently required a double hutch and a single hutch. The plan is to put the double hutch outside beside my shed and single hutch insde my shed and join them together with a pipe, this is so they can go inside in the winter if they want to. I have not looked after ferrets since I was a kid so its like starting from scratch. I want 2 working jills to start with and possibly a vesectomised hob to keep the jills happy when they are in season. If its possible I want to keep all of my ferrets together without having to seperate them. 1) First of all will it be ok to keep all 3 together all of the time. 2) Would it be better to just get the jills spayed and not have a hob and do they work just as well once they have been spayed. 3) If I get them as kits how old will they have to be before I can work them down holes. 4) How old do they have to be before i can get the jills spayed(if i went down that route) and how old would the hob have to be before I could get him vacectomised(if i went down that route). 5) At what age can i expect the jills to come into there first season and how often would they come into season after that. Can i still work the jills when they are in season? 6) Do you think the arrangement with the hutch sounds ok. Your help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Quote Link to post

Not sure on that one, although I'd personally look at getting the hob done. One less operation, and less internal work should mean less chance of an infection post op. If you get them now, they should be OK by the time the season starts properly. They may feck about a bit at first, but they'll soon start to knuckle down once they know there's rabbits about. In my experience, jills tend to settle into it quicker. They come into season when the days start getting longer and it warms up On 20/05/2010 at 09:10, THE GRIFF said: 6) Do you think the arrangement with the hutch sounds ok. Sounds fine to me, my old man always kept his ferrets in something similar with no bother. Obviously the more space the better All I've done is offer some advice based on my own experiences and what I've learned from others since I've been on here. Different folks have different methods & ideas, but working & looking after ferrets isn't hard. For a little bit off effort & initial outlay, you'll have a nice little team there for some winter fun! ATB with whatever you decide. Edited May 20, 2010 by maltenby Quote Link to post

No as he will try to mate them all the time he is in season and will mark their necks up. 2) Would it be better to just get the jills spayed and not have a hob and do they work just as well once they have been spayed. Yes, just get the jills done, they dont work any different. 3) If I get them as kits how old will they have to be before I can work them down holes. Some start them younger but i reckon 8 months or older unless they are working with an experienced ferret. 4) How old do they have to be before i can get the jills spayed(if i went down that route) and how old would the hob have to be before I could get him vacectomised(if i went down that route). Jills at least 6 months - they come into season the following spring after their birth, Hob again at least 6 months or might need to wait longer until his nuts drop. 5) At what age can i expect the jills to come into there first season and how often would they come into season after that. Can i still work the jills when they are in season? as above, come in twice a year usually, best not to work them in season as the dirt can get into their girly bits and cause infection. 6) Do you think the arrangement with the hutch sounds ok. spot on. Your help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Quote Link to post
