Hi everyone,

 

I have just gotten off the phone with Tony Wall at Sandwell Field Sports after ordering my new tuned HW97KT in .22 calibre.

 

He did me a great deal of the rifle and the full tune for £468 which meant that the rifle was £7 cheaper than the other places I'd looked, and the tune was getting done for only £45 when normally Tony charges £75 if the gun isn’t bought from him direct.

 

Bonus £52 saving straight away.

 

Anyway while I was chatting to him, I decided to ask him which pellet he recommends for tuning the rifle to.

 

He said that the 3 brands or should I say 2 brands which will become clearer later were:

 

1. The Falcon pellets if you wanted a real flat trajectory as they are only 13.43 grain and match most the HW97KT barrel perfectly giving a real flat trajectory.

 

2. FX 16 grain 5.52 mm pellets

 

Or

 

3. Air Arms Field 5.52 mm pellets if you want a more curved trajectory but a heavier hunting pellet and knock down power.

 

I told him that I loved the FX pellets and use them is 2 of my other rifles before askeding him if he could tune the rifle to them.

 

He then goes on to inform me that both the Air Arms pellets 5.52 mm and the FX 5.52mm pellets are exactly the same pellets and come from the same pellet making machine (dye) but are given different names for their different companies, i.e. FX or Air Arms.

 

The only difference is on the tins where it says that FX are 1.030 grams and Air Arms 1.037 grams.

 

Thinking about this the difference between the .030 and .037 is 3 places after the decimal point so cant really even be measured when calibrating your rifle anyway.

 

Air Arms Fields sell at £9.95 a tin of 500 and FX sell at also £9.95 a tin of 500.

 

Something to remember for the future though because if you can’t get FX pellets in your shop but they have AA Fields in 5.52 mm they are the exact same and so will work in your rifle exactly in the same way as the FX did.

 

I thought it was interesting and I wanted to pass it on.

Hi Si,

 

The RFD who supplied me with my first tub of FX pellets told me the same, however they are not identical in my personal experiance.

The AAF's have a slightly flatter head and the FX is more bulbous in the head making them a little taller.

But it seems they are virtually the same. Even the groupings in both my rifle's are very similar

I measured the two test groups to compare the size. The AA pellets were 3mm tighter than the FX but hey, that could have been my shooting

The usual difference between different JSB variants of similar pellets is the skirt thickness and the counterbore shape and depth.

FX and Fields are identical, indicating they are from the same dies.

Its good news though to know that a pellet is identical or only slightly different from your normal pellet brand isnt it just in case the shop is out of your normal brand.

 

If this is the case then AA Fields should also group well in my Pro Sport and BSA R10

Thats what Tony wall said as well mate.

 

I dont know much about pellets or their manufacture mate, so just go on what Tony Wall says as he is very clever when it comes to this kind of stuff.

Just a quickie about the Falcon Accuracy Plus pellets.

My Hw100 .22 shoots them better than Accupells , and as good as AA Fields. Trajectory is nice and flat as they leave the barrel 45 fps faster than the Fields.

very accurate on paper targets out to 55 yards, just have not tried them in the hunting field yet. I seem to have a mental block about the heavier pellets hitting power being better, though loads of people are saying the Falcons are just as effective on live quarry.

Falcons are very well made pellets too.

I weighed a whole tin one by one and they were the best I have ever tested for consistancy. Though maybe to do with the dies being brand new and maybe more variation will occur when they are worn in a bit ??

There are 2-3 brands that are exactly the same as AA fields, RWS Superfields are also identical, although my gun smith said they have changed slightly recently..

I am using falcon pellets in my 2 shot raider zini which was a pain in the arse to get a match..but these pellets are real good in it.As for hunting am dropping rabbits well with them.(45 yard crop shot on a woody last night stone dead) Maybe only grumble there soft on the skirts.
