poacherman 353
i do both. prefer mooching during the day watching the dogs work but like to test the dog on lamp. i do both also and think the bigger test for the dog is during the day. it has to use its nose, mark burrow,s and work when the ferrets in ground to get itself in the right position for a bolt and for rabbits then a clean bolted rabbit is a harder test than a lamped one imho agree with you supersam, some of the rabbits that fly out the holes are like bullets. dog needs to be sharp to get to them. a dont think you realy need to train your lurcher if your just going to take it lamping all the time. all you need is the dog to come back in after every chase and retrieve. during the day dogs need a lot more work put in to them. atb poacherman Quote Link to post
Stabs 3
Daytime ferreting and lamping too. Lamping was the first discipline we tried as a sapling and there was a bit of hunting up at the beginning, but we soon conquered that with volume of work. This type of dog learns pretty quick, even if they are a bit headstrong. Daytime is head and shoulders better sport in my book though. The bags are smaller and they are harder won, but it's a whole lot more fun and for me, you can see the dog working...and that's what it's all about for me. I run stuff these days that's a lot easier on the lamp so as a consequence I don't run it. Bloody hard daytime though so that's all I do now. Quote Link to post
pointer 543
I much prefer daytime hunting on either rabbits or rats BUT i spend a lot more time hunting at night purely because if your like me and work Monday to Friday then your not going to get enough sport in with only the weekend left.So lamping is an extremelly usefull pastime for me.I didnt do anywhere near as much lamping as normal last season because the rabbits just werent there, hopefully next season numbers will be back to normal. I have always felt that any Hunting,Shooting or Fishing i can do at night on a "work" day is a bonus. Quote Link to post
