skycat 6,174
I'm not a bull cross owner but I'd never be predjudiced against any dog. If the dog is in good condition, has the correct conformation for its type (very important that bit: you shouldn't expect a bull cross to look like a whippet type and vice versa, for example) and moves well for its type (Saluki type won't look like a bull cross) then I don't see why bull crosses shouldn't stand as good a chance in the ring as any other lurcher. However, I was told that the main reason they have separate classes for bull crosses is because the owners of non bull crosses get annoyed if they are all in the same ring. As far as I'm concerned a bull cross should be capable of running and catching what it was bred for: maybe not rabbits or hares, though there's plenty of bull crosses make good rabbit dogs. I have seen some bull crosses which were so heavy that they could only be used to catch one thing and that thing ain't been on any quarry list for many years. To my mind ANY dog worthy of the name lurcher, should be built so it is able to catch running prey, even if only a specific quarrry. If not then it should be classed as a seizer and not a lurcher. Just my opinion.
whin 463
very true sky cat if adog cant catch aroe rabbit or ahare then well its not worth keeping ,or it goes down the peg as arabbit dog or hare dog but not a good allrounder preban i always loka t alurcher as its runningability then power and well the rest comes with good breeding
Bosun11 537
Nothing to do with being better or worse ............ It's about the dog being picked out when judged against others in the ring of a similar type. Yes you could put them in with the O 23" smooth dogs, but even then there's a big difference in type. Bottom line is though, it's all for fun and it's the donation toward the hunt that counts. Dead right on that one SS. I've always said, they are all fecking Lurchers and 'should' be in the same classes, with each being Judged on its composition 'to type' BUT over the years i've seen many judges fight shy of going over bull crosses in the ring, never mind picking one out against other Lurcher types. No extra classes on for Wheaten crosses etc..... Whats the difference..... Hair? Oh and then there is the "them's not propper Lurchers" line, usually lobbed in from someone who is trying to exibit his Cavalier King Charles X Whippet 'street accident', that'll dust any one of those donkeys on anything, "they could never catch a rabbit"! But SS is right, its all fun, money 'should' be going to support something hunting related, so get out and enjoy your summer! This summer i'll be looking for a show with a 'Pirate class' for my one eyed dog, see how many of them there is......! note to self >>> add a pirate class in next show ,,,its an extra quid l.m.a.o hahaha Edited May 18, 2010 by Bosun11
bullxbitch 20
Bull x's have seperate classes because they're way to hard to be in the same ring as others
