langouroux 14
Hi all, A while ago i had a thread on here about convincing the Mrs aboout another dog....well she is convinced! cut a long story short we are moving to a house which has more than enough land to cope with 1 extra K9. This will be my first lurcher! i have a working mastiff at the moment, i shoot a lot, and go ferreting as well, so the dog will have to be broken to the ferrets at an early age / and maybe the gun later on I will mainly use him for rabbits, and any larger arguments there is always the mastiff for following up. I have a couple of questions: what should i get as a first lucher? can some one point me in the right direction of where to get one...i don't want to get ripped off! cheers Quote Link to post
kevin from bristol 95
whippet x are great for rabbits very loyal and fast they make great all rounders and arn't much trouble Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
The best first lurcher will be one you buy as a pup and rear yourself. It will be a learning experience. Most crosses will do rabbits but the best rabbiting lurchers I have seen have always had a bit of whippet. Collie/grey/whippet would do the trick, as long as the parents are grafters I dont think you will go too far wrong. Whippet beddy also great wee rabiting dogs. FTB Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
My advice is always the same mate, I never try to name any particular cross, just get yourself a puppy, look to an average hight 23" to 26", for all round work (you never know what might come up ) and ensure its from well worked parents, pref something you've seen out and been impressed with. jf1970 328
hi mate,i have just bought a 3/4 whippet 1/4 bedlington, she is also my first lurcher,i will be using her for ferreting,it took me around 3-4 mths do decide what lurcher to get that would suit both me and the dog,i had alot of help on here about making my decision, for what you want your dog to do,sounds as if 1 of these dogs would be just what your looking for,as for being ripped of,well if the breeder is any good at all he will have the pups best interest in mind and won't be to bother about raking in the cash,i payed £100 for mine and both parents were seen and are working, hope this helps cheers......john Quote Link to post
NORELATION 6
The beddy whippet should keep charles entertained until the mastiff executioner arrives on the scene. When you say working mastiff, has the mastiff played a similar role before or has it been for different type of work? Im a big fan of mastiffs but have never heard of them working as anything other than security guards so I would be interested to hear. Quote Link to post
runforyourlife 361
If you need to ask someone what type of lurcher you need, you are not ready to have one pal... All you'll get is people naming their own lurcher.. No one has ownedvery type of lurcher, some no one can answer the question... Quote Link to post

steve123 29
hello collie /greyound / whippet not too big and go for the opposite sex to your mastiff if i were you. i had a male bull grehound whippet with my male bullmastiff who was very fit and came out on my lamping expeditions when i lived in cornwall . the bull cross was headstrong and fancied his chances against the bullmastiff and i could not leave them together un attended even for a few mins both got on well with bitches of any breed ,maybe just a clash of personalities but probably down to dominance . what mastiff have you got. cheers steve Quote Link to post

Im a big fan of mastiffs but have never heard of them working as anything other than security guards so I would be interested to hear. the mastiff is a part time worker / running dog of sorts. yes he has seen work in the past but not a lot, but a few outings here and there, he has some jowls and they tend to get caught up at the very wrong moment so the mrs put the clampers on what i had him doing. there is other people on here who have mastiffs working as well mate, and retrieving to hand! mine is Alano espanol x rustic neapolitan but there is pure breed bullmastiffs that work on here to. I would love to have enough experience with running dogs to be able to comment - but I don't to be honest! But what I can tell you is this: Mastiff's are very capable working dogs and are a lot more intelligent that people think. They are also a lot quicker than people think, as long as you don’t have a show type / heavy boned line. HOWEVER mastiffs are not for the faint hearted or the inexperienced - try holding one back when he has seen some thing he shouldn't in the lamp! The best person to ask regarding mastiff x lurcher is really "bullmastiff" on here. He has a bull lurcher and a working mastiff, as well as one of their pups that he is bringing on at the moment and he has a lot more experience with both breeds. Check out one of the Alaunt link that was on here recently - these might be the sort of dogs you want! Not for faint hearted on inexperienced either though Cheers Quote Link to post

I am not interested in getting an Alaunt or mastiff cross, Im trying to help you decide what would suit you best and was putting forward the point that you might not have to go far from home if you liked the mastiff type dogs. ie get a greyhound as your next dog. Im sure this "bullmastiff" guy you speak of would give you advice. Quote Link to post
