For eggs... my faves are Leghorns, especially the white variety... 1 egg per day.   For meat I liked to cross breeds like sussex, orpington, rhode island red with an indian game cockerel...   F

The chickens I would recommend for a back garden or built up area is Brahma or orpingtons. They are very quiet and very tame, great for children to pick up and play with. They lay about 200 eggs per year, however, the best layer for me would be the light sussex and black rock though they are quite active chickens that require a bt of room.

All the best,

Lee

For egg laying its got to be a hybrid, black rock, speckley.isa brown or columbian black tail

For meat i used to breed a few dorking, slow growing but get to a good size around 10lb or quicker growing a ross cobb

but for character and looks its got to be large fowl aseel, hatched a trio 4 years ago, awesome birds then crossed with some shamo`s a mate had stunning birds, sorry no pictures.

whatever you choose im sure you will soon get the bug and it will go from 2 or 3 to 10-15 lol

Looking at getting a trio of aseels or aseel x shamo if anyone know of any??

its a bit overpriced and silly in glos for birds i think the swanky set have pushed the prices up too far .ive been asking around and everyone says they have nothing to later in year apart from overpriced hybrids.

when ive got me pen sorted on allotment im going to battery farm for some cheap birds.

then later in year will get a ixworth or indian game cockerel and some heavier built hens to provide meat birds.

Hybrids are fetching £15 to £20, and pushing the pure breeds up to £30 £35 plus each.

Welsummers £35! :icon_eek: Marans £25 :icon_eek: try phoning and they say they have sold out!

Who says there is no money in poultry keeping! With all these food programmes on the TV about small holdings etc.. the prices of poultry and the demand has blown through the roof!

Bovan Nervas, suffolk/plymouths, columbines, warrens, leghorns, all very good layers and hardy birds.
