For eggs... my faves are Leghorns, especially the white variety... 1 egg per day.   For meat I liked to cross breeds like sussex, orpington, rhode island red with an indian game cockerel...   F

Ive kept Peking Bantams which were nice little things, Old English Game, which were a nightmare as they used to try to kill each other regulaly (but i guess thats good if your well into you gamecocks), various types of the older laying types but ive forgoten what they were called, and weve had quite alot out of the battreys. Id have to say that the ex battry layers are prolly my fav because there usualy in such a state when we get em and theyre pretty well mannered docile things that lay cracking eggs when theyve been free for a while. Pekings come a close second.

For sheer character its got to be the modern game could sit and watch these birds all day long... this wee cock ruled the roost, and would see of old english, shamo, orpington, and rhodey cocks for fun, as he was small he ducked under most attacks then jumped on top... :aikido: :boxing:

While were on the subject of chickens, What's the best breed for gardens, one that will thrive and lay plenty of eggs for me :) and a nice garden bird for meat aswell. Another question a little bit off topic, Any ducks that fit that description? (Duck is my favourite meat lol) I've been doing a bit of homework but there is some contradictory stuff knocking about the internet and I would like some first hand experiences.

Thanks

We had 2 mallards a few years ago, We rescued them from chicks till they were fully grown and kept getting found in neighbours gardens, Soo we took them back the farm we got them from. I was about 13/14 then and an anti so their lovely succelent meat didn;t even cross my mind (even though I ate meat). Actually thinking back I don't think I would have had the heart to kill them because we rescued them, If they are bought for meat.........It's a different story :tongue4:
