on average how many times did you take your pups out lamping before they got there first rabbit?

im just wandering as ive just started takeing my 7/8 month pup out lamping and she has been out 3 times so far and had a rabbit the last 2 times she went out.(and no they were not milky doe's) but the last pup i had must have taken 20 times out lamping before she got her 1st but when she did there was no stoping her.

so just wandering how long you pups took to get there 11st and how they turned out.

my pup now got his first on his second run , it was my fault he didn't get the first, i shook the lamp and blinded the dog when he was about a ft behind the rabbit. I only took him out on nights the conditions favoured him for about the first five nights, stopping after the first rabbit to keep him keen.

I think a few people on here will say its too early to have your dog out working mate but its your dog and you do as you please.atb MH

bitch i owned caught her first rabbit at 9 month old first time out but i picked the easiest rabbit i could find and then went home .. done this on 3 nights up till she was 12 month old .. just so i didnt over do it with her and spoil her .

i would normaly say that it is to young but she is very mature for her age so i thourght i would give her a try and see how it went. its going well so far so im happy with her. ive also got her sister but she is a million miles of been ready to even show her a lamp. i have trained the both the same so it mad how one has matured so much and the other is like a 2 month old pup still but her time will come. im glad in a way realy as i can consentrate on one pup at a time.

not really a question of many times before a catch but how the dogs were entered......I enter mine on easy droppers, that I know they could catch for certain..........so I could say they catch on their 'first time'...... MILKY, MIXY OR WHATEVER

 

Pups that go out and miss time after time, start to jib and yap through fustration and boredom.............so I would say - DO IT PROPERLY AND GET IT RIGHT FROM DAY ONE!

Really, a dog should catch first time out on the lamp, it's not about how good the dog is, it's about how good the dog man is.It's down to you to make sure the dog is ready, mature enough and conditions are spot on, and be very choosy about which slip you go for. The most important thing in making a good dog is early confidence. If you don,t catch first time out, the dog's not failed , you have!

my first pup i owned took him out with a decent dog and just let him do wt he wanted to, the second time i took him out he was running and striking at rabbits. that was at 4 and half months old, and since his second trip out has not stopped catchin, was a true natural at the game.

as i only started lamping at the end of last season and have never lamped before we went ou 4or 5 times before i got the right conditions,ground,and technique with the lamp right for my pup to catch he was 10 mths hes gone on to bigger and better stuff after only catching 15 rabbits if you get my drift so im more than happy with him to be honest it wouldnt of hurt to have held him back for another month cheers matt

sell them must be good dogs if you must need to sell them and they cant catch a rabbit some of the poorest bred dogs ive saw could catch a rabbit , rescue dogs puppy peddlars dogs etc all could catch rabbits on the [bANNED TEXT] terrain

well when i first took my black rough dog out he was 7 month and he took to the lamp like a duck to water he got his first rabbit on his first night but he was very mature for his age otherwise i would have left him till he was older

i think it all depends on how mature the dog is and how you enter it atb jenna

this is a photo of me and my bitch it was her 3rd time out.but the rabbits ware all sitters.she was 8 months at the time. but some take longer than others so keep at it and it will fall into place

The last bitch I had caught first time out at 9 months so I was chuffed. I was offered good money for her but turned it down.

 

As luck would have it she turned out next to useless, so I don't think it matters how soon they take to lamping

it's how they turn out once they've learned.
