Click on Der DJT to see some working pics.

They are basically a type of Lakie (Ynysfor) with a bit of Welsh in there from way back (1920/30's). There was an intersting article on them in EDRD about a year ago, translated from German, all about their origins. I've seen them worked over in Poland at the trials. They are very popular in central Europe (Czech Rep. Germany, Slovakia and Poland) along with the Dachsund (Teckel or Jamnik).

I have seen a fair few of these terriers(not working) at game fairs and shows in europe, ther is a fair range of sizes of dogs, there is quite a variation.

From all accounts that I have heard from the French club they a versatile terriers not just earth dogs, very popular for boar hunting and badgers.

Yep basically a lakie, welshy...makes a smart terrier..The bit in EDRD was good article as it hard to find anything in english about these terriers.

Stabs,I have french jagd terrier club magazine here if ye want it.....quite good I am told....I dont know my french is shite :11:

THEy are by far the most popular working terriers here in Italy both for earthwork and boars hunting.if you choose a good blood line they are hard as nails.they are really dog aggressive and that's the reason I've never owned one,I've yet enough problems with my boardogs.the real good thing about them is that they are still a truly working race.I know a breeder here in Italy that have some really good jagds

the jagd was bred by people splitting from the fox terrier clubs in germany(he is 80% foxl) with a few bits and bobs added.

there is alot of value laid on "voice" and "gameness" along with nose(sense was not taken into the breeding scheme :whistling: ). they were bred purely for work in germany(meaning their type of work)as an allround terrier and still is trialled on all areas of work (earth,stoebern/hunting up,trailing/schweiss,retrieve, and anything else you can think of not restricted by size).

i have worked them above and below ground and never had any complaints(dog agressiveness is a trait that should be considered a character weakness!!!).

they are an excellant breed(as are the teckel, lakeland, patterdale, russel and foxl) that is sadly being bred "out of club" and sold cheap in germany(the downfall of most types is becoming popular imho).

beware the cheap dogs and get one from a reputable breeder with a good name(and goal) for the work you want it for(don't get a 18inch boar dog if you want an all rounder including earth work).

there are other types coming from the jagdl, the heideterrier is bred for work on moors where he SHOULD not bother with fox to ground and has been bred bigger and with an enormous chest  .

the westfalenterrier is bred by the mr beckman in rheine(a well known breeder and worker of jagd) as a pure strain of sandy dogs with a black mask which are reputed to be from the best jagd breeding and are only sold to men/women who hold a german hunting qualification!! a good man to talk to if you are after a dog from germany( i know some breeders, the details of which i will pass on to SERIOUS enquirers).

as with all dogs they will become what you let them. great workers or a pain in the posterium.

they are not the "be all and end all" they have a good prey drive as do many other breeds FROM THE RIGHT STOCK.

I must disagree with you, the cheaper price doesn't make more popular any breed because nobody can make any profit from them. This is the cheapest terrier in Hungary and didn't become popular -except the hunters of course.

anyway, good post as ever. :notworthy:

i agree that the price is not a deciding factor but the breeding goals are upheld by the clubs/responsible breeder regarding size, weight, and gereral form.

i have found that the "breeders out of club" i.e. without papers(making the lineage harder to follow).

there are some very good dog men who will do their best for the working dogs and as always there are some who will breed from mediocre/untested stock and sell them as jagdl( the prices for pups reflecting the input of time, effort and money spent on producing/testing the line to a very high standard).

as always if buying a dog you should ideally know the line and work they do,the only other way is to see black on white what the dogs have "done" and the line back.

once again the clubs i speak of are not "showy"(the form of a dog is judged as a pup and as an adult to specify whether it should be bred from or not). the aim of these clubs is to test and work dogs to a high standard in the interest of the breed(whether teckel, jagd, foxl).

further to that they build a community with a common interest(with the social/political rubbish that comes with any group :wallbash: ).

there are lots of men who breed jagds for earth work(herr beckmann, rheine. herr benedikt,davensberg...)

the terrier club in dortmund will get you the lines of some very well bred dogs of fitting stature for the work you want them for bud.
