Ratcherman 0
Well, after struggling to see a buck lately I know my luck had to change, so last night I decided to go out for a wander about 7ish. It was a lovely night, no wind and bright sunshine. After arriving at the wood I was going to stalk I was 5 mins into the stalk and spotted a deer, but a quick look through the bins confirmed it was a doe. I walked another 100 yards through the wood and looked out onto a bordering field to see a fox walking towards me. I got up on sticks but could not get the shot for the trees. The fox seemed to stop and turn around and trot back down the field so I ran up to a good vantage point looking down on the fox but as I got there I watched it walk into a small copse. I gave a little squeak and it presented itself for a perfect shot at 120 yards, squeezed the trigger and down it went. It turned out to be another barron vixen as I had just shot one here a week earlier. As I walked back down the wood I got a phone call from a farmer friend saying that he had lost a few hens over the last week, so I said I would be there in 10 mins. As I pulled up in the farm yard I spied a deer in the field, another look through the bins confirmed it was another doe. I had about half an hour of light left and decided to go for a lie out watching a wood edge, as I got there I spied another deer which also turned out to be a doe . As I lay and watched the doe feeding a young buck emerged in the next field and run into a gap in the hedge into my field. He kept looking behind him as he ran, and as I looked a mature buck followed behind chasing him. He zig zagged around the field, chasing the young buck, they stopped but were silouetted on the top of the hill. I had to wait again until the mature buck gave chase again. As they ran down the bottom of the field the young buck jumped the hedge and the mature buck stood broad side at 140 yards. I squeezed the trigger and watched him go down on the spot . I gralloched the buck and had a walk around to see if I could see the young buck, but to no avail, but he'll be there for another time. The buck was a nice healthy beast weighing 44 lb gralloched. A cracking night, it's good when things go to plan. I'll just have to put some hours in now to try to get the fox for him. Quote Link to post
