dog aggresive pat

Recommended Posts

how ye lads! ive got a 9 month old pat bitch, this is my first terrier from actual workin stock so am unsure as to if she is overly aggresive with other dogs or if she's just being a real terrier.she has been domanint with my 2 year old male staff since we got her at only a young pup. she gets possesive over a kill i.e a rat or rabbit or even at the entrance of a rabbit hole that a rabbit has just gone down, she will always snarl or snap at any other dog that tries to get hold aswell. in her defence tho, she has never actually bitten another dog and doesnt start trouble with the dogs she knows unless thers prey involve. im real interested in tryin her to ground [bANNED TEXT] shes old enough but ive been told a terrier thats dog aggressive isntideal for that type of work. can [NO TEXT TALK] tell me if this is just nateral behaviour for a terrier from working lines or if this type of aggression will be a real problem.. thanks

I mite be wrong but if she is out working with other dog's then she mite be showing just pack instinct some one has to show who is boss and and it is clear it is her. this is just my opinion but i get it with my dog's.

I find its not always good to have dog aggression in workin terriers, infact its pain in the arse but it doesnt mean she wont work.. But it could also mean it could be her downfall in the field when she turns on a bigger dog when tempers n adrenaline are riding high..

By the way, where ya from pal?

most of the best working dogs have no interest in fighting, but she is only a pup, good chance she will settle down with age and work.

i dont think you av a problem, i av seen many dogs like this, my last dog was a lakeland he was very agresive with other dogs, but i only used him for earthwork, i kept him on a lead till we got to the earth enterd him,[bANNED TEXT] we finished he'd go back on the lead, if u do it properly and dont double her up u shouldnt have a problem, turns out he was the best dog i av owned to date, hope this helps mate atb snowman.

She might grow out of it. My patt was like that when she was younger, all noise and snapping, not actually attacking. She calmed down loads after her first year. Teach her a good 'leave' command to keep her out of trouble in the meantime.

Good look with her

Sounds to me like she's just trying to show dominance and is a bit of a quarry guarder. If she is needlessly aggressive, biting dogs for no reason then she'll be more hassle than she's worth, in saying that it doesn't mean that she won't go to ground and do a good job for you, but if she's more interested in fighting other dogs than getting the job done that's when it'll become a problem.

If you see her acting up, then step in and put her in her place.

Best of luck with her.

she is just showing leadership, dominance.Ive seen/heard of a lot of patterdales that were very dog aggressive-most were great workers if a little too hard. When i was a young fella i saw a dog get his arse eaten off by a patterdale that ran down after him(stayed on his fox though).Anyways best of luck with her ,i hope she turns out good for you

dont have any expierience with real earth working dogs as yez can tel, so have another question for yez. more out of courisoty than need to know.. the young pat bitch doesnt seem to play like most other pups ive seen. it seems like she is always harrasing my older dog, snarling, barking in his face ,nipping , and biting and holding on to his cheeks especially, if you didnt know her you might not be blamed for thinkin she was actually getting stuck in to the dog. im courious to know if this is instinctive behaviour. playing as if working an earth or am i just looking to much into it?

Id say you have a good one, used to live in dublin myself until 2 years back -serious amount of game up there(more than down the sticks lol).out blanch direction by the canal(mind the trains) is a very good spot, wankers of farmers though, back of maynooth college is a decent spot to start a young dog(again trigger happy farm manager)

I'd be careful what you're saying about your spots on this forum pal, you'll have gobshites turning up and taking the piss with them.
