Daveo 61
This is purely hypothetical but If you had two pups out of the same litter, one was worked and tested to the full and had no faults the other never even saw a rabbit. Would you breed off the untried dog? Quote Link to post
wirral countryman 2,110
why not breed off the tried and tested dog?atb, wirralman Quote Link to post
Daveo 61
for the sake of argument Its dead Quote Link to post
Big bald beautiful 1,231
NO I rehomed a wonderful looking whippet to a pet home, it wouldnt chase and frankly saw more get up and go in a toy poodle, i wasnt the only one with a non worker from the litter so i couldnt put it down to me not understanding the bitch. I could have taken a litter and got £350 a pup , but i wouldnt buy one and therefor wouldnt sell one. theres enough being bred with out adding to the rounds 2 Quote Link to post
leec 132
it would cost just as much to rare a litter as it would to buy a pup off tried an tested parents,id only ever breed myself if the parents were 110% and the line meant something to me Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
NO! There are shit loads of lurchers about - go to any show and see how many arent working - why add to the problem so you can say you have pups? Dont know what the fascination is with breeding litters - they will cost you money, there loads of work etc FFS get a job if you have too much spare time (joke) FTB Quote Link to post

Guest michael.hudson7
I have a first cross saluki greyhound that was sired from a track dog and the bitch was a simulated coursing bitch. Not much hunting instinct in the dog but blisteringly fast and can run for ever. However as far as breeding dogs i think the only way to go is breeding working parents. Quote Link to post

Guest fence_hopper
why not mate where i'm from holyhead there all breeding from dogs with little work behind them, some even get whippets for nothing and bang a dog over them straight away and sell the pups for top whack, thats how they do it this end. i'm used to it same can be said for most anglesey lads. Daveo 61
Is that really what you think Mr hopper? Im detecting a hint of sarcasm Quote Link to post
moonlighter 1,163
Well look at this way....Say you had a top class dog like barny for example and you and your mates have never had a dog like it. Then he dies suddenly and you never had chance to breed him to your top bitch....but your parents owned his brother, bengi, for example..but he was purly a pet and has never even seen a rabbit. would you use him as the next best thing, as the bloodline is identical. A non worker is different to a failed worker dont you think? Quote Link to post
riohog 5,701
considering a lot of lurchers are bred from ex track greyhounds .. who have only ever seen a mechanical hare .. it appears to be acceptable to breed from non workers Quote Link to post
moonlighter 1,163
As i have only breed a couple litters and all the pups i have kept in touch with have turned out ok, i carnt really answer this question, but has any of you bred a litter where one pup has turned out fantastic and another pup out of the same litter turned out complete shite? it would be interesting to know.
