Stop being pedantic eddie

Well up until fairly recently, I've been ok reading/struggling with many posts on here.  I know not everyone is good at spelling, grammar etc, but I've sometimes had a try at some posts, and given up and moved on, which is a shame, as some of these fellas have some interesting and valid things to say.  But there we are, things move on.  ?

As soon as I saw I bred the best dog in the country . And will again that was enough for me .empty vessels make the most noise . The best dogs I saw run were owned by humble honest lads who are decent company .and it was a pleasure to watch there dogs run .and theydidn't need to big there dogs up ever .

I think running dog books are a waist of time tbh better off experiencing your own experience in the field an making your own memory’s and mind up rather than reading bummed up story’s told by story tellers telling of amazing dogs to sell books they all chatted shit in that era an hay day of amazing lurchers they peddled they were all kissing each other’s arses for a name drop in each other’s books to give some kind of authority of that they were all linked to peddling of there certain xs that they specialise in I know there was a lot of bumming an blowing going I don’t believe none of the shit in any of the books tbh the simple reason why is because none would ever write the drawbacks of the crosses or any shit dogs they had that were duffers/jackers or generally not up to the job the only books I’ve read that ring true with true accounts of good dogs an turds is darcys books an that’s from actual his or other hunters accounts

why so cynical? they didn't write about them because they were no jackers/duffers. they knew best....... ? loads of us were drawn into it simply because there was nothing else to read.

Whatever you say about Plummer etc, and fantasist he may have been, but his books did inspire a lot of young lads to get a dog and get out there, and for their time they read well and the photos were good. Just got to take them for what they are, a bit of light hearted hunting themed entertainment.

Yes, but a lot of people didn't take it as light hearted, hunting themed entertainment, and took it as 'gospel'.  Not me, before you think otherwise.  But I personally think that the tripe he wrote about his terriers and lurchers catching x amount by the time they were 4, 5, 6 months old etc etc, is a lot of the problem why many newcomers getting into dogs and hunting, are expecting WAY TOO MUCH of their pups and  getting pissed off that their 8, 9, or 10 month old pup is struggling with catching stuff.  It's still a pup!

I remember reading something somewhere that he wrote stating expect a young lurcher to run over a 100 rabbits before catching 1. I found it to be a strange thing to write but have seen lurchers that make very hard work of catching a rabbit. Not something I've experienced with whippets or greyhounds or crosses between the 2.

I know you're jesting blacky lol, but none of my pups have ever been asked/tried to catch anything on purpose, different when you're out on a walk and a rabbit gets up and they chase it, before they are about 13/14 months, and then it'll be some easy as I can make it, lamped rabbits for a while.

But that's me, always been the same.  My old man and his mate kept greyhounds, from the 70's til very early 80's, and used to stress to me about leaving a running dog mature a bit and let it 'grow into itself' before starting em properly.

Well there we are, if someone expects a young dog to run a 100 rabbits before catching one, the dog is obviously too young!  ?
