airgunner106 0
Hi guys im kind of new to air rifle shooting. i know the basics and shoot every weekend. But i feel a bit of a novice when i ask this. Can you have a silencer on a spring action because i was told it doesnt do anything and people only do it for looks on spring actions? Also i noticed that the BSA Lightning is spring action and is sold with a silencer. Thanks guys. P.S Is it worth me gettin a BSA lightning or stayin with a crosman phantom .177? Quote Link to post

SEAN3513 7
silencers do work on springers...........but it only stops muzzle crack, it wont stop the "twanggggg !" noise...lol if you are happy with your crossman stick with it.........no point spending if you dont have to. personally i would advise keeping yours and saving up for a PCP. atb sean Quote Link to post
JackReid 35
Yes mate in some circumstances they are very useful and essential for good hunting in my opinion. Or at least they will open your world up a bit more in opposition to scaring away everything after one shot. It depends on how loud your gun is, and where the voume is coming from. In a well made Air Arms or Weihrauch springer the internals are better engineered and although powerful and efficient they have less of a 'crack' or 'twang' coming through the stock. I own a HW95K and it comes with a large Weihrauch silencer. Without it, it is a very very loud gun coming from the muzzel. Silencer on it is remarkably quiet, you would not believe how quiet it is now after being used lots and worn in, therefore having a nice smoth firing sequence. Where as my friend has some peice of crap BSA springer that twangs like its broken, brand new. . Assess where you think the gun is kicking volume out from- probably quiet hard to do however... A good silencer fitted well will definatley take the noise off the muzzle, in some guns they are barely audible at 30+ metres. Let us know how you get on! Phantom 631
I have silencers for both my PCP and Springer The standard AA one on my PCP was good, but not great. I then ordered a UK Niel silencer for my springer. I put it on the PCP and WOW far superior to the AA one. Did a few mods to the AA one and its now a discreate phut! The UK Niel one is back on the springer where it belongs and is excellent. Now my springer is an SMK XS19 and it was very loud. Silencer work's a treat there is noise from the action, but I have dampened that by putting some felt pads between the wood of the stock and the metal of the action. Now at 30 yards all the bunnies are going to hear is the CRACK of lead on skull and believe me, unless its dark a bunny hearing that CRACK as his/her buddy takes it in the noggin will still bolt for the nearest safe haven So its not so much the sound of the muzzle or action, its the lead on bone that scares them into giving it legs. This is especially apparent when you use a virtually silent PCP. Bunnies don't hear it at all, but once you hit a bone, it can even make the shooter jump! Incidently take off the silencer of both and stand down range of each (you have to trust someone for this) and get them to fire a pellet a couple of feet to your left or right. You'll hear the pellets fly by and you'll hear the springer muzzle crack But with the PCP, you'll think someone fired something much more than a sub 12 in your direction By their very nature and design, a pcp is much louder at the muzzle than a springer.
