Good points skycat, very good, and thanks for understanding the post...I to feel the same about animals and vermin around human areas. And body language and signals all make the dog respond..

My lurchers do live with cats so they have no interest in them but do what yours did to fox. As for the feral incident, they both got covered in blood and scratches but knew it was no ordinary domestic cat...

Again your answers just prove the inteligence of the working lurcher.... againb mind blowing,,,

I like to see a close bond between handler and dog... or, at least a level of understanding. Most young dogs soon learn from their handlers reactions to various animals, what is fair game to hunt, and

I know all what has been said. Its all good imput. I work lurchers most days of the week, and feel that i have been in almost every situation possible. So would have been

very hard to ask a question, i knew most of the answers to. It was a topic i wanted to discuss, and not argue over, as this is what happens in here on a regular basis, when

a question is asked. Yet it seems to have still offended a few folk, why i dont know...

I could put a post up saying "jesus, i have a headache today" would i get into trouble as there is no answer. Yet on here i would get back, "you are a dick if you dont

know why you have a headache, its coz you were drinking"!!! Or it may say, "you must have banged your head" and when i say, "no i promise i havent it was a statement,

they would say" you must have you dick"

Back to the post, A ferret smeels very much like a stoat when scenting,, it is a very similar smell, yet again, the lurcher retracks its attack from the ferret...

My first two lurchers used to hunt a lot of foxs,Being a young lad with loads of time and energy used to be out all day every day,any way at some stage they learned that when magpies called it ment they had seen a fox,No matter how far away or how strong the scent the dogs were on at the time, they would run to the magpie.Never had a dog do it since.Still find it fasanating.

Why do you want to argue... Andi am afriad it does. You smell your dog after it has had hold of a stoat! Then go smell a male ferret scenting whilec impressing a female ferret... and when its balls are swollen. You stated you only catch a few rabbits, so maybe you have forgotten the nasty smell a stoat gives off when being pursued...

Why have you deleted your other post chalkwarren, it was a good fair comment mate...

you pulled your other post off chalkwarren, was just wondering why, it was a good one, and added sting to the debate mate..

And dont chavs and nasty young gurls say " :clapper: yeah, whateva" :whistling:

I am a Chav...

You can congratulate yourself a bit matey, there are many many dogs that wouldn't act like that. And it's the synthesis of training, repetition and environmental factors (scent, sound, movement, shape, noise of prey).

Hey, I like a good arguement like the next guy :whistling: But if you actually read back this thread, your the one who is trying to argue mate. I miss read (which I don't think I did) a section of your post and your still having wee digs at it. Ohhh well, what ever floats your boat ma man....... :boogie::boogie::boogie: Pssssst, I know you think you know it all cos you've errr done it all but I'm afraid you don't but hey ho.....

I've had lurchers and whippets that will ignore pet rabbits running free in the garden and try 100% to kill wild rabbits. Dogs are not as daft as some people think.
