Marty O Hare 3
Nice pic. Remember doing some tree work in a park in Liverpool that had two or three in the pond/lake, supposed to have been there years. What part of the country you at ?

That'd be Walton Hall park Marty, been turtles there for as long as I remember. Local fishermen kept 'em well fed and they survived the winters. Someone took 'em about 7 or 8 years back and the fishermen (in number!) 'went round' and got 'em back. As far as I know they are still there.

Lol, is this a joke (home of great football) Turtles and terepines are all over the place. Been being released for many years. Have had one sweetcorn and one on maggot... Hannah4181 260
The influx of terrapins and turtles was once again down to fashion and fads. The pet trade in these critters went through the roof in the late 's and early 90's when the kids TV show "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" was a massive hit. Unfortunately when the next big craze hit and the reality that captive turtles and terrapins can live for 25 years plus, hundreds of "pets" were dumped in local ponds and water ways . . . . seemingly they are doing well and thriving. dogs-n-natives 1,182
but apparently they cant breed, as the eggs never hatch due to our mild climate.... is this true?

I'm not sure, but it would make sense. I used to work at a zoo which had a huge lake in the centre, hundreds were "dumped" in there by visitors getting rid of unwanted pets. Some had grown pretty large, but i never saw any evidence of young.

Neal 1,873
I've seen them in the moat around Fort Brockhurst in Gosport when I was in my teens in nineteen hundred and somethingorother. I'd heard similar to you Hannah; ie that many were bought as pets and kids didn't realise they'd grow so much bigger than the couple of inches they were in the pet shop. Cowabunga! (I hope I've spelt that right: they were a bit after my time).
