FightTheBan 1,147
To be honest I wouldnt waste my money on a spade again after going through a couple of bulldogs last season alone. Took 2 old bulldog heads to a welder fabricator I know and he made us 2 spades to my own spec - full metal with superb welding. These will never break! Spend a little more and you cold get one made of ally. I'ii put up pics later if I figure out how to... FTB Quote Link to post

Rugersrob 38
is there anywhere you can just buy the heads? i like em heavy so used an old scaffold bar on an old head nice an heavy bitch to carry.. Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
This is what I used all of last season. £10 a piece for the spades and he made us a wee probe for free. Ive drilled a hole in the top of the large spade and the probe slots inside the shaft - the wee spade is invaluable if you get deeper than waist height, turn it on its end and it hacks through tree roots a treat as well. Bulldog spades are great - but at £30-£40 a piece after you loose/break a few you get a bit pissed off. You would have to be a really rough bast to break the welds on that - and you will find most welder/fabricators are only too happt to do jobs like this as they are good for the young apprentices to learn on. Guest AngelicAcid
So you just took the heads to a welder and asked for them to weld a shaft handle on? what is used for the shaft? Where would be the best place to get the heads from? Edited May 7, 2010 by AngelicAcid Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
So you just took the heads to a welder and asked for them to weld a handle on? Where would be the best place to get the heads from? If you go to a game fare there is sometimes a stall that sells old army bulldog spades for a fiver. Break the wooden shaft, and throw them in the fire - this will burn the wood out of the spade head then you have a clean spade end to take to a welder. Tell him the height you want and your sorted! Pa No heavier than a fiberglass bulldog - its thin tubular steel - not the scaffolding poles filled with concrete that ive seen some people use lol. Drilled a hole in the spade head, clip a dog lead to it and it goes over your shoulder. I do % of my terrier work on my own so everything that saves weight and frees a hand is great. nakednutt 58
The steel I used when making was roughly 32mm or 38mm galvy'd handrail. i'd say they were the same weight as a fibreglass bulldog but a hell of a lot stronger. Quote Link to post

Guest wurzil
i bought one from a metal fabricater in merseyside who used to advertise in EDRD mag, bulldog head and steel shaft welded in and T bar for handle but he also cuts a V groove in shovel mouth for root splitting. its a great little spade and i like using it, he sells them for £32 delivered and his number is 01512865980 if anyones interested. yis wurzil.
