Saluki X Head strong ignorant

Recommended Posts

Having worked and trained many dogs not only for myself but for other people I find the odd saluki and saluki X very headstrong selfish and ignorant. The other day after a heated discussion with a friend who only works saluki Xs .His opinion was that occasionaly a Saluki or Saluki X without obvious reason would be untrainable. The argument he used was a few dogs he,d owned in the past would,nt come back would hunt up and completely ignore him untill it had caught something or was completely knackered. He said that some of them are this way and nothing can be done to correct the problem his words(IF IT,S IN EM IT,S IN EM).End of.I responded by pointing out that not only had none of my saluki Xs or any that I,d trained for other people shown this behaviour and that it could be a problem caused by owners of the dog or the way it had been trained. He said I was wrong and I had just been lucky that one of these saluki or salukiXs had yet to come my way.My opinion has not changed I think having a good trusting relationship with one of these dogs or Xs and bringing it on as you would any other lurcher is key to getting a well behaved loyal dog. He pointed out the fact he had owned lurchers of this X for many years and this behavour was random and if it was the owner it would happen more often to certain people I,E the crap dog owners.Has anyone working Saluki or their X,s come accross this trait.I did point out that owning a driving licence for 50 years does,nt mean you can drive but I think it was lost on him .Any oppinions ,thoughts, points of veiw,or stories welcome ATB fieldsman

hear this all to often ,to grater or lesser degree,in some cases it is lack of understanding on the owners part ..but......i do know of a couple of pure salukis that are really nervious and skitty extreamly fast and rally good hunters ,,but you cant get ner to them .! the man who owns them has kept pure salukis for 30 years ..used one of his bitches and put someone elses dog to it and out of the litter of i think 6/7 2 were like this ... it was definatly the breeding from the stud side .. that this trait came out in shame becouse it is probebly his fastest dog right now !! it happens

:hmm: Of course I understand what the original poster is saying,..but, in my opinion,..and in my experience,..it is not solely the province of the noble Saluki,..to be labelled,... untrainable...

Most dogs can be 'sorted' to a degree,.but sometimes,..one comes across a hunting dog that loves to hunt,.. almost as much as it needs oxygen,...it craves the chase so much ,..that nothing short of death threats will deter the fecker,.and in a minority of cases,..some would prefer a quick death,.. to a lingering life,..unable to fulfil that ancient and primitive craving...

I know that feeling myself....

GOOD POST CHALKIE ,

AND VERY TRUE ............

HAVING RUN SALUKI LURCHERS [ WONDER WHY THEY CROSSED IN LURCHER ???? THINK ABOUT IT ! ] FOR YRS AND HAVING SEEN LITERALLY THOUSANDS AT HOME AND IN THE FIELD ...........................

IMO .......... ITS MORE THE WAY THEY ARE WORKED AND KENNELLED BY THE OWNERS ............

A STORY TO ILLUSTRATE ..........

A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE WAS HAVING A REALLY TERRIBLE TIME WITH SOME WELL BRED SALUKI LINES ...... HE HAS WONDERFUL KENNELS , PLENTY OF EXCERSISE AND WORK ETC , ETC ......... WHICH IN ANY NORMAL CASE WOULD LEAD TO A WELL CARED FOR DOG .............. HOWEVER HE HAD MAJOR PROBLEMS ...... THE DOGS HOWLED , WOULDNT LISTEN TO COMMANDS , VERY SLOPPY RECALL ..... ETC , ETC .................

HE REALLY WAS AT HIS WITS END !!!

NOW THEN WE WORK TOGETHER.......... AND AT THE TIME WERE ON A COUNCIL TYPE HOUSING ESTATE AWASH WITH SALUKI CROSSES ........ EVERYONE WAS TREATED THE SAME WAY ........ KENNEL IN THE BACK GARDEN , DOGS FREE TO ROAM AS THEY WISHED , THEY JUST JUMPED THE FENCE AND OFF THEY WENT ........ NOT ONE BIT OF BOTHER TO THE OWNERS

THEY WERE ALL FAIRLY GOOD TO COMMANDS AND LITERALLY SPENT ALL DAY LONG WITH PEOPLE .................

AND HERES THE CRUX OF THE MATTER ................

IMO ....... THE SALUKI Xs ARENT THE TYPE YOU CAN PEN UP GO TO WORK AND SPEND AN HOUR WITH A DAY

THEY NEED TO BE WITH THEIR OWNERS , SPENDING A LOT OF TIME WITH THEM AND SEEING NEW EXPERIENCES AND INDEED SENCING THE OWNERS MOODS ETC ...............

A LOT OF THIS TYPE DONT TAKE TO PENS EASILY AS WELL ............... REMEMBER THE SALUKI ROAMS FREE IN ITS NATIVE LAND MUCH OF THE TIME SPENDING ALL DAY WITH PEOPLE .............

YOU OFTEN CANNOT TAKE OUT FIXED TRAITS WHICH HAVE BEEN BRED IN FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS . TO DO SO IS LIKE BANGING YER HEAD AGAINST A WALL

ALL THE BEST

exellent reply duckwing, i was introduced in to the dog game by being given a salukix pup. he was unbelievably hard to train, very flighty and a mind of its own. they do need a lot of time spent with them and as i learned they dont respond to scolding. but as i found once the dog reached 14-15 months old he settled down an turned in to an incredible hunter. they are very faithful but certainly not forshort tempered people or first timers

WELL MATE ,

ONE SALUKI LURCHER BITCH I HAD ,,,,, WAS A COMPLETE NIGHTMARE

IF SHE CAME ACROSS SOMETHING SHE DIDNT UNDERSTAND OR LIKE THE LOOK OF .. NO WAY WOULD SHE WALK PAST IT

AT TIMES SHE WAS VERY FRUSTATING AS UP TILL THE AGE OF 10 MONTHES SHE WAS VERY BIDDABLE ....... GIVEN TIME AND LETTING HER GET PAST THAT TEENAGE [ 10 TO 20 MONTH OLD PERIOD ] REBELLION STAGE ... TURNED OUT A VERY GOOD BITCH

ONE THING ABOUT THE SALUKI BLOODED DOGS .... THEY ARE NATURAL KILLERS ........ SOMETIMES VERY PRIMATIVE

I HAD ONE SALUKI BLOODED BITCH FROM TOP CLASS LINES THAT WAS AS CLOSE TO PERFECTION AT LAMPING AS IAM EVER LIKELY TO SEE .........

THEY HAVE FAULTS ............ BUT DONT THEY ALL ?????

ALL THE BEST

one of my pup's that my relation has is 10 month old that was pretty bad he'd come with in arm's length of you but you wouldn't get him on a lead then he'd walk but always stay that couple of steps in front he just bared with it sometime's it would take 30 min's of just stood there not moving till he came back the more you shout and scream the more they'll take the piss but he bared with it he's coming on a lot and the very worst thing you can do is lose your rag when it doe's come back you hit it, it won't come back the next time it's off

one of the pure's my dad had 35 year ago would sometimes dissapear when out or if it got out the back would dissapear for week's on end it alway's came back but if it felt like dissapearing for a while you wouldn't stop it all i can say treat them right bare with them and when it get's there it's well worth all the effort

Over recent times i have taken pups to both puppy and intermediate obedience training.Initially this was done just to do something with a pup.The pups all took to it and it was great socialising experience especially the most recent classes where all the pups were allowed free play. One bitch was very good and the trainer seemed surprised. Its just my opinion but it seems to have produced level headed dogs.My friends laugh about it but it seems to be of some benefit and a bit of fun.
