Dan Newcombe 58
What sort of nose do you reckon your lurchers have? I do a bit of stalking and am thinking about getting a dog to follow up any runners and for others in the area. Mate has a Bavarian but i dont fancy one (or the price) and never been a big lab fan (never say never to having one but not my first choice) Im a firm believer that the nose is in a dog from the start to a certain extent (obviously hounds have an advantage over a greyhound) and its how you bring them on that 'wakes' it up. So do you reckon that a bull cross (probably 1st cross) would be up to the job tracking wise. I worked in Australia for a while and hunted with pig dogs that were simialr breeding but obviously selectively bred and they were unreal trackers. If it is i think the other atributes (big, athletic and brave) would make it a top choice. I know i could get a lab or a hound but ive always liked lurchers and was going to get one but dont really have the work just as a runner. Do you reckon they have it in them? Dan Quote Link to post
Dan Edwards 1,134
Get a bulldog cross and you will have more than enough nose. Quote Link to post
Dan Newcombe 58
Ive never seen bulldog crosses in this country, generally its the bull terriers that are used Id emphasis, its not for chasing them down or hunting them up. Its for following the trail when something goes wrong (rarely hopefully) and correcting a mistake. think that the size, speed and mentality of the bull would be ideal for the job if a second shot cant be taken or it is a strong runner. Plus i like them Dan Quote Link to post

Dan it depends on luck and how the dog is brought on i think.i've a 1/4 pit 3/4 grey dog that hunts on by scent and it helps him catch foxes by day.his full sister is used as a lamp dog and doesn't use her nose as much.you're right,a lot is down to how they are ran on when young. Bosun11 537
Never owned a half X bull yet that couldn't use its nose and use it well, they'll find and mark as good as any if ya 'just tune 'em in'. Got one now, thats lost its eye, so is semi-retired from the lamp, he's getting real good at finding quarry daytime, sometimes too good! Edited May 7, 2010 by Bosun11 Quote Link to post

Dan The bull cross will have more than enough for what your looking for, its the job you give the dog that will decide what particular atribute, he puts to use,,, Quote Link to post
hogdog 61
My Ingles bred Bull Terrier has a fantastic nose on him and he really uses it well, in fact it surprised me just how much he uses it. Bull Terriers (EBT's) are well known for having a good nose so I would try to find a well bred Bull Terrier cross. They're not easy to find though. Edited May 7, 2010 by hogdog Quote Link to post
Dan Edwards 1,134
yip seen a few bull crosses mark an bush allsorts of quarry so there nose will work fine if they want to use it tho the few collie/bull/grey's iv seen had even better noses, bit of collie added or just the dogs iv seen Never been around any collie lurchers per say dotty but been around some different collie blooded type "cur" I guess and agree with you. What I think it is about a dog with collie blood is that it gives them a sense of style. They have a different way about them, its almost like they cant help but be in the right place at the right time. I know some pretty "quiet" type but extremely successful bobcat and grey fox type hunters over here that have hints of collie blood here and there in their hounds and these dogs cant help but catch game. Its almost uncanny how they just know where to be. Quote Link to post
