bringing on my pup

have got a 6 month old bitch.she is lurcher to lurcher bred.great temperament does as shes told and getin fairly obedient.a genuine little bitch.about a week ago i was walking with her across a feild when a rabbit got up.shes very keen and took off after it.she made good ground for a young dog but the rabbit went under a gate and got away.bess yapped once then returned straight back.tonight i was walking over the footy club and simalar situation unfolded chased the rabbit it got away and she yapped twice this time.i dont go looking for quarry perpesly with her.does this mean i have a dog that opens up or is it just frustration and if i keep her away from all game till older and fitter and she catches do you reckon she will settle????.would like your opinions please.

try and make sure it doesnt get away next time then seriosly though it sounds like she needs a few easy ones to build her confidence if you catch my drift maybe a trip out with the ferrets and nets is in order

Should be ok if you hold her back a bit untill shes around the 10 month mark then give her some easy runs. It's when they yap whilst chasing that your f*cked cos that means they already think they wont catch and are frustrated and then it just becomes a habit.

6 month is young for some x's to be catching rabbits if its a big breed it needs more time to mature idetion is right 10 months or harvest time and then see the difernce

she very young, just frustration ,theres a lot of conflicting advise on here about starting pups young, get her used to gates ,fences etc, build up her confidence out, but she dont need to see game til she's ready ,

sounds good advice.will be following that.just have to keep her away from me permision.its crawlin with em.there really not nervous at all and are getting out right into the feilds in daylight.so walked up squatters on lamp come season wont be any trouble.better get me self couple of jills.cheers agaim.atb.mat.

I mean its disrespectful to your quarry and just a lazy substitute for putting in the effort and having the fieldcraft to walk up a nice sitter out in the field on a good windy, rainy night to give your dog its first tastes of success, or taking the dog ferreting and letting it pin a few in the nets. Dropping rabbits from a sack for your dogs is the kind of thing the Greyhound lads do, its wrong and it gives us a bad name.

Sounds ideal mate. Enter her nice and slow and steady, build her confidence with early success and by the end of next season i bet your having A LOT of fun!

 

and yes - ferrets are ALWAYS a great idea!
