Ideation 8,216
Everyones having kits at the moment and everyones getting them out, gawking and handling them and taking photos to put on here. We know what they look like when they are born, they all look the same. STOP F*CKING ABOUT WITH THE KITS! It's rule number one and i don't understand why so many folk find it hard. LEAVE THE JILL AND KITS A LONE OR SHE MAY KILL AT LEAST SOME. Especially don't touch them as they will very quickly lose their natural smell and smell of you. Also they pick up disease etc very easily now so that another good reason to LEAVE THEM THE F*CK ALONE! They stay blind for 5 weeks. I don't see mine until they leave the nest box of their own accord - before this the number and colour mean nothing to me, i just let nature take its course and make sure the jill is well fed. Rant over. Jai. Quote Link to post
mackay 3,364
No offence mate but it's fcuk all to do with you if other people want to handle their kits. Quote Link to post
longdog13 36
to be honest chap, each to their own, over the years i've always looked in on the kits, i've handled them and also helped out once with a kit that got stuck on the way out, lucky to be there that time. I have never had kits killed or abandoned after i've touched them, and my jills have usually been present at the time and don't seem unduly stressed. i know what your saying does happen, but there are often exceptions to the rule matey. All the best buddy, LD13 Quote Link to post

mackay 3,364
Especially the ferreting section it would seem, I've always checked my kits within a day or two of being born, handled them to check everythings ok, I've never had a jill show aggression to me or her kits and as yet I've never had a jill eat her litter. I've also had a jill have a kit on my lap and was neither up or down but hey maybe I've just been lucky, or perhaps I'm not as experienced as the other ferret owners on here. Quote Link to post
scothunter 12,609
i agree with the OP maybe he was a bit harsh but what he said was right.just because a mother hasnt eaten her kits with handling them, dont mean she wont.best left alone imo Quote Link to post
jenksi87 3
i wouldnt handle them myself but its not up to him to tell people not to. at the end of the day everyone does things there own way, so if people feel there ferret will be fine with it then thats up to them, if anything happens its there fault and there loss, no one elses Quote Link to post

That's not giving advice that's telling people that do it different to him there doing it wrong and he's doing it right. There's a difference. A couple of points regarding the advice as you call it, one, the hutch, nest box bedding etc should, if you have daily contact with your ferrets carry traces of your smell, why would that bother your ferret if it's used to it. Two, the likelihood of disease, where from?, you, your in the hutch daily anyway and I would also add there probably more immune to disease at this stage through the jills milk than they ever will be again in their life. Also the bed box/ nest would need monitoring for waste and dead young, so waiting 5 weeks to discover the issue would cause more problems then checking on them. me thinks anyway Quote Link to post

jenksi87 3
agree mate, but that can be done without picking them up and taking pictures of them, which i think the lad was on about. each to there own. you do it how you want to, not how nobody else wants to. my mates been telling me to seperate my jills when my sandy has her kits. but i'm not beacause i think they will be fine and thats the way i want to do it. if it goes wrong then its my fault Quote Link to post
lorelei0922 2
I think its more a case of watching and knowing YOUR jill and your relationship with her... as said in a previous post.. if you're tending her properly before hand.. every single thing in her bed and hutch will smell of you... if it isn't .. you've already screwed up by not having a good bond with your animal, so yeah you're gonna end up with problems... Never had a litter eaten myself or neglected cause i poked my two cents in.. and i handle them plenty.. but i've only had 5 or so litters so maybe i've just been lucky with the kits i've raised... if a jill tells you to get the hell away .. you leave her to it.. telling people their way is DEAD WRONG an you know best isn't gonna get your point across either... Know your animal.. pay attention... and you wont go far wrong.. 1 Quote Link to post
