Phantom 631
I'm not going to put this in the Hunting section as I did not set out to shoot this. I think its more of a humane act of mercy, rather than an act of hunting. Got up this morning, sun was shining and I thought, right, go finish that computer for the neighbour, then get my gear and go bunny boppin I could be in the paddock in 2 hours if all goes well Closed the back door and something caught my eye, a cat running down the path. Looked down to my right as I locked the door and there in the corner is a young fledgling Collerd Dove looks like I may have just saved your life little un... I bent down figuring, I would take it into the garden and give it safe place on the arch until it was ready to fly off. The little dove didn't even flinch when I went to pick it up. And I figured I'd get a close up of its head as it looks quite sweet. I went to show the wife and even carrying the dove upstaires didnt seem to phase it. something not quite right here. I looked around its wing and found this There is severe damage to the wing, breast and further up the neck. After debating wether to take it to the local vets or not, I decided against it as the last time I took an injured animal that I had found to the vets; I got landed with a bill for 89 quid and the cat died later that day! And being on long term sick, I couldn't afford it. The wounds looked pretty unsurvivable to me especially where the breast and back had been opened and I could see into the chest cavity. There was also bite marks in the neck. So I got my HW40 and put an Eley Wasp through its brain. The Doves head fell forward immediately so although I feel bad not being able to save it I think that I did the right thing??? Soon after, I saw the cat back in the garden right up near the door. If I'd been in, I'd have slammed the door open Phantom Quote Link to post
Sweeney-Todd 208
Hi Tony. Nasty wound mate, you did the bird a favour, poor little sod was proberbly in shock. Doubt it would have made it to the vet's anyway Vet would have disposed of it too I reckon. Bill. Quote Link to post

Edgar 1
I have found when birds are injured or sick they tend to give up and die, you did the right thing, well I would have wrung it's neck, saves pellets and is humane. Quote Link to post

aaronpigeonplucker 32
you did the right thing. theres a lot of collared doves nesting at the moment and i have 2 pairs in my garden alone. i dont shoot them as i have no reason to. they dont damage the veg patch like the woodys and they are so tame you can walk right past them and they won't fly off. Phantom 631
I know what you mean Aaron Theres a couple that have built their nest behind a Sky Sat Dish on the house that I used to live in. When I walk down the path to the railway station, there are always a couple of Doves sat on the wire fence. Ive walked so close to them that I felt one's tail feather across my ear when it turned round to face the tracks. Phantom Quote Link to post
