to get a dog the most fit he could be you wouldnt have enough time in the day to walk him to get him fit enough. tread mills are very handy but it depends on how much stamina you want the dog to have. a marathan runner or sprinter will generally train all year round but massivly increse a few month before the race. it same for dogs you wont harm your dogs by make them work through tiredness thats were stamina comes from with the mals they do have rest periods but to keep them fit we wouldnt rest them to much otherwise they'l be size of whales. be progressive dont do to much to soon but if you start gradual now by winter you'l have a very very fit animal. by winter you should be able to put the dog on tread mill do few hours on let them off for few mins then back on. ive had mals on tread mills for six hours a day with little rest periods. as long as you progress slow you can never make them do to much. then in winter it'l be how fit you are as the dog will walk and run all night. but can you

Id have to agree wit most here pal.. I use a threadmill on dogs myself but not this time of year when weathers good n plenty of sunlight u should get out wit ur dog.. I use mine just before or when i start to work them n there always at a good level of fitness before that.. But to answer ur question., a mile on a threadmill is good enough, what i do is start off at walkin pace n build it up every 5 mins til u get to a good trot.. On my treadmill a mile usually takes 25 mins.. I find the treadmill good for stamina but u must have dog to a decent level of fitness before u can start him on it.. Another thing, i wouldnt go puttin a pup on a walker as it wudnt be good for growin joints..

.... Pa

a mile takes 25 mins??? thats slower than 4 mph...average persons walking speed :icon_eek:

Personally i don't and wouldn't use one, i feel there is no need, the dogs are relatively fit in the summer with regular strolls and run abouts and in the winter the best fitness is regular work, but i see no harm with what you are doing as long as your dog sees the outside world aswell, remember that the treadmill only makes them trot/run in a straight line whereas free running allows them to twist and turn also.

Remenber that the joints etc will move through a very restricted range on a treadmill and adapt that that, which is fine untill they are extended beyound that range such as chasing a rabbit when they will suffer damage. Do plenty of ball work, free running to try to minimise this or get a pair of trainers and get out running with your dog then you'll both be fit for the coming season, it works for me an i'm an old git.

regards sandymere..
