Early morning text from farmer...........

Recommended Posts

I was having a lovely lie in this morning when a text came through from the farmer across the valley,he has been having fox trouble recently, and,I have dropped a lot of foxes this year on his farm, and in the valley around the farm where I have other permissions, but, last night a hungry red had been tearing away at the hen house trying to get in.Luckily though he didn't manage to get to the hens this time(last time 14 chicks and 2 hens),so,after I had done my Bank holiday duty and taken my mother over to my brothers for a few days away,I got myself over to the Market garden which looks over the farm, and, set up in a hawthorn hedge for whatever came along,I have had a ot of deer off this place in the past,so,I was hoping to do the double so to speak. As it happened there was plenty of time to take in the scenery, and lovely it is too, but,I was surprised that it was quite so quiet. As time was getting on a bit now,I decided to have a squeek, which I carried on for approximately 20 minutes, but, still nothing,so,I decided to have a slow walk back to the truck which could still turn up either a deer or a fox, and,as I carefully made my way down the banking I saw a slight movement,so,I froze, and slowly brought the binos up,and, there she was,a very small vixen at 160yds and she was stood like a statue watching something in a bramble bush(probably a baby rabbit as there are quite a few over there).I brought the rifle up onto the sticks, but,it wasn't an easy shot as the sticks were lower than they would be on level ground,so I was crouched over a fair bit, but,if I had tried to move I felt the fox would be off,so,I regulated my breathing and slowly squeezed off a round, and, back came the thwack that told me it was a perfect shot...........

I then sent a text to the farmer and a mate, and,I received a call from my mate that had just dropped a Buck,so we were chatting when I suddenly realised a Muntjac Buck on the other side of the field,so I cut the phone call short and tried to get round to a point where I might be able to get a shot off(he was skylined).I dropped back behind a bush, and made my way to the very bottom of the field and skirted right around the long way,I was quietly confident of at least getting another sighting of the Buck, but,as is often the case............I was very wrong!!! No Deer to be found,he must of got a scent of me as the wind direction was moving all the time as it often does in this valley, still never mind he will be there for another time, and at least the farmer was happy with the dead fox, lets hope it was the one after his hens.........cheers...Martin
