arcticgun 4,548
being well bred will 'up your chances' of sucess, but you have to put a lot of work in yourself and also a pinch of luck is needed Quote Link to post
rebel2009 20
well i have got a lakeland terrier and the parents are not workers and from what i have put into him he works 110% so i think its realy what you do with them when they are younger dogs atb Quote Link to post
hullhunter 219
i would say its what you put into them. you could get a pup from the best working dogs in the world but if you dont have a clue how to train it then the chances are you wont get it working but a good dog man will get a pup working weather it has come from working dogs or not. waidmann 105
a mediocre dog can be trained well and make a good one,a well bred dog can be messed up and fail. a well bred dog trained well and given time to mature can be an excellant dog. the dogs need the confidence which can be built up and the bottle to stay. there are exceptions to every rule where untested lines still produce very good pups(untested by work but bred to have sound temperament and good health). even good show line can and will produce good dogs if trained and allowed to show their potential. the small part we have in "making" dogs we have to play with the "sense and format" the dogs are due,i think more dogs fail due to being entered to early and not built up after a "bad experiance" and culling weak stock(allthough i fully agree with the process) happens too quickly in some kennels. to sum it up, do your best to get proven stock and your best to train/enter as best you can and the result should be a good dog. waidmann Quote Link to post

Paul in North Lincs 15
Breeding is not an exact science - but certainly good genes to good ups the chances.... More to the point, its how the pups are entered and brought on...... pups out of proven workers mean nothing if the nurturing and training is arse about face.. Quote Link to post
NORELATION 6
A POUND OF BREEDING IS WORTH A TON OF FEEDING it goes without saying that you have to also bring the dog on right Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
It's exactly like kids - there has always been the debate about will nature or nurture have the greater deciding factor in how a person or animal will turn out. To be a truly great dog i think it takes both. That doesn't mean that you need famous lines or names, just a dam and sire( and preferably further back) that have proven that they can do their job and that they are free of health defects. These kind of pups seem to have it from a young age, at 8 weeks they are already alert, watching, ready to chase, and exhibit all the makings of a great dog even before you do a thing. However a bad owner or a good owner who makes some big mistakes can completely ruin such a dog and make it worse than useless. A good owner will work to turn that dogs potential into reality. Having said that i think a dog of average breeding in the hands of a good dog man will be far greater than a dog with the best breeding in the world in the hands of a bad dog man. jmo Jai. Also you are the only one 'you know of'. Not all dog men are obsessed with comparisons or showing other how much or how hard they work their dogs. no offence. Jai. Quote Link to post
