Know of a bitch that was kept as a pet till the age of 5 then was started,...Turned out a very good bitch and still going well

same as starting a young un chap , hold it back let it see another dog graffting if theres a spark there it will show itself

Heard of dogs that were started later and worked to a decent standard, and longer than a lot of others.

Me brother got a choc dog given that was a pet he was 3 and started first time he took him to an active earth.

i wos once given a black n tan bitch wi stick up lugs, think she was about 4ish, she was a couples pet n reason she gave me it, it was b****d 4 cats. it was back in the 8tys [bANNED TEXT] i did a lot of rock spots. what a fox killer she turned in2.

Years back, a mate of mine took on an unworked 5 year old Border/Lakie whos elderly owner had died.

Turned out to be a cracker - absolutely silent, but an real fox killer.

A mate of mine has got a Russell that killed its quarry to ground quite regularly. I'm pretty sure that, that dog didn't really start till he was about 4 years old.

we never worked our male patt till he was five,he picked it up without even watching another dog.Always had the natural ability,was just not able to work him often enough.

I put a post on here a while ago about a mate who was desperately in need of a working terrier (he had lost two to ground in one season through no fault of his own).

 

I got him a border x lakie off a local farmer. The dog had been chained up for the past 3 years and was wired to the moon (had bit 2 people and killed a score of cats). The farmer said take it befor I shoot it.

 

I tried the dog out before i sent it to wales, dug 4 or 5 foot to him constantly locked on to his fox and the dog hasnt looked back since!

Has been dug about 8 or 9 times and is getting better at it every time (twice in one day as well). Too hard for my liking, but he can handle himself.

 

Very capable dog that had alot of pent up aggression through not being able to work - he is now sound with other dogs and sometimes comes into the house for a shot in the bed! .

 

Pal said its the best 50 quid he had ever spent!

 

It has to be said though, this farmers stock originates back to a line of working terriers so they are not pets.

MY FIRST TERRIER BORDER/LAKELAND XPAT NEVER DONE NOW,T TILL IT WER 3 ,PLENTY RAT,S RABBIT,S ,JUST A BUSHING DOG FOR ME AT THE TIME ,I WAS ABOUT 16 ,HAD NO INTREST IN DIGGING ,DID,NT HAVE A CLUE ,TILL ONE DAY ,HE MARKED A ONE HOLER ,TIGHT AS f**k U COULD,NT PUT YA DOG IN? HE KEPT ON DIGGING THE SETT OUT TILL HE CUD HIS HEAD IN THEN HE WAS GONE,AT THE TIME I HAD NO COLLERS ,SPADES,NOWT, THEN I HEARD THE NOISE 4 THE FIRT TIME,THE DOG BAYING,MY HART SUNK DID,NT NO [bANNED TEXT] TO DO ,I WAS WITH MATE OF MINE WHO SAID IT,S GOT TO BE A FOX ,SO HE RAN BACK HOME COME BACK WITH AGARDEN SPADE,AND OUT OF PURE LUCK I DIG WHERE I COULD HERE THE BATTLE ,NO MORE THAN 1 FOOT OF ASH AND SOIL,HE WAS THERE MIXING IT WITH FIRST FOX,THEN I PULLED HIM OUT AND FOX ,THEN SECOND FOX SHOWED BE HIND THE OTHER 1 ,2FOX,S FIRST DIG WITH A DOG AT 3 WHO HAD NEVER SEEN NOWT LIKE THAT,SO I THINK THERE GO WHEN THERE READY TO GO .
