feeding advise please

hi just got my first lurcher and was woundering what people are feeding there dogs i was hoping to feed both dry and raw but not sure which dry is best. the only dry food ive seen in my area is wag,omega,pets at home own brand and red mills racing dog food. thanks for reading and look forward to any replys.

pro plan and hills science plan advanced fitness dry food,and i buy 400gram bags of prize-choice raw food,rabbit,beef,lamb,turkey,chicken,tripe... expensive i know but my dogs only get the best,they run all day and in great shape all year round,am a big believer in feeding only the best bt every1 to there own

cheers mate its the redmills im with at the moment but was told 27% protein is to high and go for something with about 24 25% protein or do u have a redmills with less or have i been given bad advise. thanks mate

Like everything else, if the dog is doing fine on it then its ok. High protein is only really a problem if they aren't getting enough work in my view and even then its not a health problem but a over hyper, etc, problem. The dog isn't long in telling you if the feed ain't right for the work load.

totally agbree mate buy the best u can afford i never thought of them brands because i was looking at just working brands

or types. what is the protein persentage mate. thanks

cheers mate he is only 5 months and ive had him 2 weeks so we are just doing training at the moment but i think he looks ok on it and he is doing really well with training except his stalls are a bit running but that could be just the change of food and surroundings i surrpose. thanks

hmmmmm I don't think you get a higher percentage than 27% mate which to be honest is suited for a hard working dog. At 5 month you want a dog that isn't too full of energy that it wont listen to you. Think of kids full of E type numbers and how hyper they get. If you find he isn't listening to you then I'd cut back on the protein. Too much is put into the feeds now a days as if its the be all end all. Dogs have been running LONG before these fancy brands came onto the scene and they've done ok through the years. Like most of the products on offer, they are more to attract the owners than benefit the dog. If its just a pup mate, go with a cheap nugget brand, mixed with meat and if his stools don't stiffen up, you might try adding a few slices of brown bread into the mix. Just my opinion mind you....

"His stools are a bit runny" that's what you get with Red Mills mate, wouldn't be my choice that's for sure.

There are higher percentages out there, Red Mills Excel is 32% but as I've said above I wouldn't feed Red Mills. I usually bring pups up on a mixture of raw meat and Chudleys Working Crunch or sometimes Chudleys Greyhound and that seems to do the job.
