JackReid 35
Hi again all, Got out for an hour and a half just now. Very windy again so wasnt ideal shooting conditions, nor was there much quarry about, probably sticking in the shelter of the hedge rows. I did a stalk around the place and hadnt seen anything. Started to walk this hedgeline slowly. This slope I carved my teeth on in the sport when I first started shooting here as t was a really active warren and I sued to shoot from the bottom. My actual aim here was to get to the bottom and approach the opposite slopes that are my killing ground at the moment. As always, until I find out how people get huge pictures you will have to click on them, I am uploading them as close to their max size as possible. Quote Link to post
JackReid 35
I then saw an opening in the hedge on my right, which looks onto another field, and rabbits use that field aswell, although not as often. The wind was coming hard from my left, so I thought, Hmm maybe I should pop my head round that side see if theres anything, and I thought 'Nah.. even if something was there its very awkward to shoot round, wouldnt have a chance'. SO I walked a few steps more and changed my mind based o nthe fact the otherside of the hedge would be more sheltered from the wind. I walked up to the barbed wire fence, poking my head over looking left and there sat a fairly large rabbit about 25 meters down the field. I coudl only see the rabbit through the overgrown hedge hanging over the fence, and didnt have any muzzle clearance to take the shot from being stood up. So I alowly tok a pace back and thought about what I should do. I looked down at my feet and realised the lower part of the hedge was cleared, unlike the top half and theyre may be a line of sight underneath it. Knowing that this meant the rabbit would be able to see my boots, I slowly went down into the prone position. Picture here is taken later to aid my explanation. Quote Link to post
JackReid 35
I popped up my rear lens cover (When walking about and leave the front one open, I'm only scared a zip or something may scratch the reticle end) and left my magnification on 6x and A0 on 25 meters which is what I walk around with it on as a sort of default. Wasn't much of a bragging shot at 23 meters but the wind was coming hard from the left. I considered that maybe the wind would only push my pellet off target for the meter or so that the hedge was open, and once on its way on the sheltered side of the hedge it would fly straight, however the grass blowing round the rabbit suggested it was still quite windy, and by feel I gave it probably about a mildot or more to the left (shows you the strength of the wind on a 25 meter shot) and held under my vertical a tiny bit as I am zero'd at 25 meters. I let RWS Superdome set off on its journey through a rabbits head and beyond out into the field. This was the view of the shot. Edited May 2, 2010 by JackReid Quote Link to post
JackReid 35
Feeling chuffed that I had bagged one again and seem to be ending this dry spell, I got up, reloaded and climbed through the fence. As I slowly walked along the hedgerow I saw another on the same line, he wouldnt have heard the shot at the 60 meters or so he was away with the wind, Once your about 30 meters away from my gun being fired you cant really here it anyway these days (as mentioned in previous topic). I knew it would be tough to get into range on this bunny with no proper cover so I took this photo which although simple is pure class, the fallen beast on the right, with the other in the distance. Once again, give the pics a click o nthey open propley. Edited May 2, 2010 by JackReid Quote Link to post
JackReid 35
I crawled until I was in line with the dead bunny and despite not spotting me, the second hopped into his hedge, likely due to the buzzards screaming overhead. Quote Link to post
JackReid 35
Like I said, despite it not being a bragging shot in distance, the hunt leading upto its demise was what made me feel chuffed to come away a bunny on an early afternoon shoot in really intense wind. Unless I go out tomorrow before I head back to Bristol thats me out the game for a few weeks! Jack Edited May 2, 2010 by JackReid Quote Link to post
