How do you go about obtaining permission?

I know it is better to go knocking on doors rather than phoning or writing. But what is your opening gambit.

Introduce yourself. Then ask do you have any problems with rabbits, crows etc., or just come straight out with it and ask for shooting permission.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I usually just knock on the door and ask about ferreting , sometimes works sometimes it doesnt . I did pick nearly 700 acre up a few weeks back by asking if i could do the crows though . Just pick an area you fancy , jump in the car and drive round the farms . The worst they will do is say no .

have a look around from the roads, and see if you can identify any problem pests and areas that they have,

no good going up saying, can I help with rabbits, if they say, we aint got a problem

where as if you can say, I see you have a rabbit problem in fields x,y, or z

or pigeons, crows, rats etc
